Contemporary slavery, also known as modern slavery, refers to the institutions of slavery that continue to exist in the present day. Estimates of the number of slaves today range from around 21 million to 29 million.

Modern slavery is a multi-billion dollar industry with estimates of up to $35 billion generated annually.

The United Nations estimates that roughly 27 to 30 million individuals are currently caught in the slave trade industry. The Global Slavery Index 2013 states that 10 nations account for 76 percent of the world’s enslaved. India has the most slaves of any country, at 14 million (over 1% of the population).

China has the second-largest number with 2.9 million slaves, followed by Pakistan with 2.1 million, Nigeria with 701,000, Ethiopia with 651,000, Russia with 516,000, Thailand with 473,000, Congo with 462,000, Myanmar with 384,000, and Bangladesh with 343,000.

Mauritania was the last nation to officially abolish slavery, doing so in 2007; yet 4.3% of the population still remains enslaved.

Despite being illegal in every nation, slavery is still prevalent in many forms today.

Slavery also exists on a smaller scale in advanced democratic nations, for example the UKwhere Home Office estimates suggest 10,000 to 13,000 victims. This includes, forced workof various kinds, such as forced prostitution.

The UK has recently made an attempt to combat modern slavery via the Modern Slavery Act 2015. Large commercial organisations are now required to publish a slavery and human trafficking statement in regard to their supply chains for each financial year

Slaves can be an attractive investment because the slave-owner only needs to pay for sustenance and enforcement. This is sometimes lower than the wage-cost of free labourers, as free workers earn more than sustenance; in these cases slaves have positive price. When the cost of sustenance and enforcement exceeds the wage rate, slave-owning would no longer be profitable, and owners would simply release their slaves. Slaves are thus a more attractive investment in high-wage environments, and environments where enforcement is cheap, and less attractive in environments where the wage-rate is low and enforcement is expensive.

Free workers also earn compensating differentials, whereby they are paid more for doing unpleasant work. Neither sustenance nor enforcement costs rise with the unpleasantness of the work, however, so slaves’ costs do not rise by the same amount. As such, slaves are more attractive for unpleasant work, and less for pleasant work. Because the unpleasantness of the work is not internalised, being borne by the slave rather than the owner, it is a negative externalityand leads to over-use of slaves in these situations.

Modern slavery can be quite profitable and corrupt governments will tacitly allow it, despite it being outlawed by international treaties such as Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery and local laws. Total annual revenues of traffickers were estimated in 2004 to range from US $5 billion to US $9 billion, though profits are substantially lower. American slaves in 1809 were sold for around $40,000 (in today’s money)[citation needed]. Today, a slave can be bought for $90.

10 Expectations of School Canteens

Original article published by:                  Momma 2

School 4Running a school canteen can be a tough and thankless job so firstly we would like to say “Thank You” to all of the volunteers and workers that give their time to our schools.

However, just as we expect a standard of education from our schools we should also be expecting a standard of nutrition from the school canteens. (When we say “we” we mean parents, teachers, society and the government)

Why should we all care?

Well parents should care because we are parents and we want our children to be happy and healthy. Teachers should care because when our children go into the school yard and eat unhealthy food they come back to the classroom and the teachers are on the receiving end of the mood swings. Society should care because “un”health care is costing us a fortune, plus our tax dollars are going into education and we should be expecting a good return on investment.

The Government should care … the Government should care like crazy … because health care and unemployment cost the Government big dollars. (Let’s face it, if the Government are spending big dollars on the sick and unemployed they will have less dollars to spend on the country and themselves)

So here are the top 10 expectations of school canteens we should all have:

  1. No added sugar – with so many natural, healthy alternatives this is so unnecessary. Don’t know how to cook with honey or brown rice syrup instead of sugar? Ask us!
  2. Stop using white wheat flour – Approximately 75% of Momma Green’s clients test positive for wheat intolerance. Imagine 75% of school children filling up on white wheat sausage rolls, pies, pasties, sandwiches? It has chaos written all over it! Don’t know how to cook without white wheat flour, check out our recipes.
  3. No high fructose syrup – high fructose syrup is just as bad as sugar and has exactly the same behavioral consequences.
  4. No maize – Just as we are seeing 75% of the community with wheat intolerance problems we are also seeing approximately 65% of the community experiencing an intolerance to maize.
  5. No Soft Drink – None at all, it doesn’t matter what type of drink it is they are all dangerous to the health of our children. No sports drinks, no energy drinks, no canned drinks! Let’s get some juice and smoothie bars happening. Don’t forget water, good quality, filtered water should e freely available in every classroom, after all, no water = no learning.
  6. No Coffee – No doubt some teens love the coffee high but the coffee low is frying their brains in the afternoon. If teachers want coffee put a coffee machine in the teacher’s lounge but coffee is not helping teachers or students focus in the afternoons.
  7. Don’t be a corner store – At a corner store or petrol station we expect to find highly processed, pre-packaged items like ice-blocks, chips and lollies. That is the reason many parents choose to avoid these stores but when you put them into our schools it makes it impossible for our children to avoid them, help us out here and take them out of our schools.
  8. No colors, flavors, preservatives or e-numbers – If our kids can’t read it, pronounce it or understand it we don’t want it in their mouths. Let’s be honest most adults can’t pronounce these ridiculously long names but we can tell you what the majority of them mean … behavioral and learning difficulties that’s what. Doesn’t this seem counter-productive?
  9. A plant based menu – Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, lots of home-made ice-blocks, juices, smoothies, Mexican and Italian food which kids love and are so easy to add vegetables to. Fruit salad, crudites and dips, sweet potato chips … the list is endless … ask the kids what healthy foods they love and cook that, kids are creative you will be surprised by some of their ideas.
  10. Lastly and most importantly, Health over profit – With a lack of volunteers many schools are taking the easy way out and outsourcing their canteens, this is akin to privatization of the health care industry and deregulation of banking, put simply when money is the focus and people are a secondary concern money is going to win. So how do we fix this little dilemma?

How about Government incentives for canteens that adopt a better way of doing things? Wouldn’t this help everyone? It would help our canteens get creative, our children would be healthier and better able to learn, our teachers would be able to teach more effectively and as parents we would be picking up healthier, happier children that have been educated in the classroom and nourished during meal time. Isn’t that what we should all be expecting from our schools?

The Mysterious Sandwich Thief

Sandwich

In Europe and America, an innocent black man likely becomes a suspect because of the colour of his skin. At the premises of the industrial cleaning company, are workers from various countries, including Africans. For almost three months, the company we were working for, takes us to another industrial company in the district of Antwerp, called FABRICOM, to work there.

Fabricom is a construction company occupying a very large terrace. The company installs and maintains electricity installations, video surveillance, heating etc. Like the officials, the industrial workers also used containers as offices, toilets and dining hall.

The work at Fabricom was very heavy, thus; among hardworking operational staff, we do eight hours per day and most of the time, I drive a forklift. At 12 P.M, we have our lunch break. It was launch time we detected that some of the workers’ launch box had gone missing.

To work very hard and to find out that your lunch box is missing or stolen, is an issue too tough to handle. This didn’t happen once or twice but daily. Action speaks louder than words. Being Africans among white workers, all eyes were on us as the suspect, even though we weren’t accused of any theft.

At the dining hall, the atmosphere becomes tense, when on the fifth day of the week, one of the workers finds his food stolen again. This time, the management decides to do something about it. They secretly started their investigations, creating undetected hideout aiming to catch the person responsible for this theft red-handed.

The following week, about a quarter to noonday, a mysterious man emerged into the quiet dining hall, looking for a meal to steal. After tasting a number of meals, he finds a delicious one and he took it. As he tries to walk out he was intercepted.

Shockingly, out of over hundreds of workers at the company, the mysterious thief appeared to be one of our colleagues from Portugal. He was interrogated but the company didn’t call the police. Instead, they informed the boss of our company of what has happened.

Fabricom wouldn’t like to see the thief at the company’s premises again, so the company I was serving sent the Portuguese to another place to work. Sometimes it’s very hard to be judged wrongly because of the colour of your skin, but that shouldn’t prevent us to build a good relationship, with our neighbours, colleagues and our bosses.

China’s Foreign Minister to Visit Ebola Stricken Countries In West Africa

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi speaks during a news conference after meeting with Singaporean officials in Singapore August 3, 2015

World | Reuters | Updated: August 04, 2015 10:34 IST

BEIJING:  Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi leaves this week on a visit to three of the African nations hardest hit by an outbreak of the Ebola virus, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday. Wang will leave on Saturday for a three-day visit to Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, the ministry said in a brief statement, without giving further details.

Wang is now in Southeast Asia, where he will attend a regional security summit this week. Ebola has killed more than 11,200 people in West Africa since it broke out in December 2013. China, Africa’s biggest trading partner, has sent hundreds of medical workers to Africa and contributed aid of more than $120 million to the anti-Ebola effort, after initially facing criticism for not doing enough.

Many big companies in China have invested in Africa, tapping the continent’s rich vein of resources to fuel the Asian giant’s economic growth over the past couple of decades. About 200 operate in West Africa, where Ebola has been at its most lethal.

Top Doctor: U.S. health authorities waging mass Ebola cover up

Ebola 4

Article originally published by examiner.com

A well known and highly respected doctor has come forth with claims that the U.S. government has been intentionally concealing cases of Ebola in the United States.

Dr. James Lawrenzi made the comments on Thursday while appearing as a guest on the Alex Jones show. Jones, the host of a nationally broadcast radio talk show, Infowars, has been an outspoken critic of the way in which the Ebola health crisis has been handled by the Obama administration. Lawrenzi, who owns and operates two health care facilities located in in Garden City and Archie, Missouri, claims that the number of Ebola patients in the U.S. is much higher than what the Centers for Disease Control has been letting on.

According to Dr. Lawrenzi, his suspicions first arose shortly after news broke that Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian visiting family in Dallas, Texas, was diagnosed with the deadly disease in September of 2014. Lawrenzi claims that he was told by a doctor at Truman Lakewood Medical Center in Kansas City that the hospital was also treating a patient with Ebola like symptoms who was demonstrating a high fever and was bleeding profusely from multiple orifices after having recently returned from West Africa. The following day, claims Lawrenzi, the same doctor told him that the patient had “disappeared” but that it was highly unlikely that the patient could have left of his own accord giving his grave medical condition.

Another patient displaying classic Ebola like symptoms was then admitted to Kansas City’s Research Medical Center the following day but also quickly “disappeared,” said Lawrenzi. Neither patient has ever been found.

“These patients are disappearing, they’re doing something with the patients and God knows where they’re going,” the doctor said.

Lawrenzi said he did not know why the federal government would be intentionally trying to hide the number of patients infected with Ebola, or where they may be taking the infected patients to. but speculated that the cover up may be being carried out by the Centers for Disease Control as a means of preventing panic. “They’re preparing for something,” the doctor added, conjecturing that the illness may be used by the Obama administration as a means of implementing a medically induced “martial law”.

The doctor’s suspicions were validated, he said, when health officials told workers at his own health clinics that they were not to use the term “Ebola” when dealing with the public.

Dr. Lawrenzi’s claims mesh with reports published by the New York Post, who recently broke the story that New York City’s 911 operators have been banned from using the term “Ebola” over public radios. According to the Post’s report, a NYFD memo dictates that all employees refrain from using the word effective immediately. “At no point shall a dispatcher transmit over the radio any message containing the word ‘Ebola’ or related terminology,” said the memo. Instead dispatchers have been told to use the code letters “F/T,” as in Fever/Travel, to communicate that a person for which 911 has been called is demonstrating a fever and has a history of travel to West Africa.

“When flu season hits, people are going to be coming into the hospital for flu or Ebola, they’re not going to know what they have….it’s going to be a nightmare, every doctor I’ve spoken with is terrified of this fall” said Lawerenzi.

The doctor ended the interview by urging people to “stay away from places where there’s large groups of people,” including hospitals, he said, as the situation was “much more serious than they’re letting on.”

When You Look Into The Mirror, Tell Me What Do You See?

I am neither a poet, psychologist nor clairvoyant, but I am worried about the direction this world is heading to. I’m baffled over the constant decaying of our society. Many feel okay with it and don’t care much, but I do because I have children and when the rain falls, it doesn’t fall on one man’s roof. Everyone gets his or her share of the menace of the society when trouble explodes.

There are many people in jail over crimes, while there are real criminals in white-collar jobs, sitting at the offices with impunity. In fact, it’s not only those who commit crime are criminals, but also those who knew about the crime but cover up. At times I wake up in the morning and feel the thunderous beat of my heart in my chest, like someone who is expecting to go to jail over a crime, yet I haven’t committed any crime.

It was during one of those experiences I wrote this article, “When You Look Into The Mirror, Tell Me What Do You See?”

Everyone has a mirror at home, even in modern toilets mirrors are available to take a good look at yourself before stepping out. When you wake up in the morning, after taking your bath and putting on your beautiful dress, shirt, and trousers, surely you go in front of the mirror to have a glance at yourself, when satisfied before ever stepping on the street.

Mirror

The image in the mirror reflects on your sincereness and dishonesty

However, in front of the mirror, tell me what do you see? Your own image, isn’t it? Do you love or hate yourself? Does your heart accommodate hatred against your neighbor, co-worker or your boss? The heart can’t accommodate hatred, then love your neighbor at the same time, because hate and love can’t dwell in the same heart.

When you look into the mirror, tell me, what do you see? Your own image, isn’t it? But do you cheat on your husband or wife? If you do, are you happy? Believe me, you will be  happier if you don’t involve in such activity. Many people think they can be happy when they cheat. You are only inviting unhappiness into your life.

Mirror 2

The way people with double face look like in the mirror.

When you look into the mirror, tell me what do you see? Your own image, isn’t it? But how sincere are you the way you want everyone around you to know? Are you a parrot at work, undermining your colleague to be fired, because you hate her or you are speaking well about her to gain promotion?

When you look into the mirror, tell me, what do you see? Your own image, isn’t it? Remember there will be a time; you can’t see that image anymore, because this world is not our own, we are just passing through. (Tribute to Jim Reeves) But before we finally leave, ask yourself, did I made others happy or miserable?

Your answer would let you be happy or sad in your grave.
