Blood Will Tell

Blood 6

When a woman’s body is found in a Portland park, suspicion falls on an awkward kid who lives only a hundred feet away, a teen who collects knives, loves first-person shooter video games, and obsessively doodles violent scenes in his school notebooks.

Nick Walker goes from being a member of Portland’s Search and Rescue team to the prime suspect in a murder, his very interest in SAR seen as proof of his fascination with violence. How is this even possible? And can Alexis and Ruby find a way to help clear Nick’s name before it’s too late?

April Henry weaves another page-turning, high stakes mystery in Book 2 of the Point Last Seen series.

April

April Henry writes mysteries and thrillers. I live in Portland, Oregon with my family.

When I was 11, I sent a short story about a six-foot tall frog who loved peanut butter to Roald Dahl, the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He took it to lunch and showed it to the editor of a British children’s magazine – and she asked to publish the story! (For no money, which might have been a warning about how hard it is to make a living writing.)

My dream of writing went dormant until I was in my 30s, working at a corporate job, and started writing books on the side. Those first few years – when I wrote a book a year, worked full time, and had a baby – are now thankfully a blur. Now I’m very lucky to make a living doing what I love. I have written 15 novels for adults and teens, with more on the way. My books have gotten starred reviews, been chosen for IndieNext, translated into eight languages and won awards in several states. And Face of Betrayal, which I co-wrote with Lis Wiehl, was on the New York Times bestseller list for four weeks.

I have also reviewed literary fiction, YA literature, and mysteries and thrillers for the Oregonian, and have written articles for both The Writer and Writers Digest.

In 2014, look for two books: The Body in the Woods, the first in the Point Last Seen series, and A Deadly Business, co-written with Lis Wiehl.

Found, Near Water

KATE 4

Rena Sutherland wakes from a coma into a mother’s nightmare. Her daughter is missing – lost for four days – but no one has noticed; no one has complained; no one has been searching.

As the victim support officer assigned to her case, Christine Emmett puts aside her own problems as she tries to guide Rena through the maelstrom of her daughter’s disappearance.

A task made harder by an ex-husband desperate for control; a paedophile on early-release in the community; and a psychic who knows more than seems possible.

And intertwined throughout, the stories of six women; six daughters lost.

I thought that not knowing was the worst thing I could ever endure. Not knowing if she was in trouble or needing my help or in pain. I worried that she’d been taken by someone that would hurt her, then I worried that she’d been taken by someone who would love her and care for her and in a year or two she’d have forgotten I ever existed. Not knowing was killing me.

The police found her body stuffed into an old recycling bin out the back of a sleep-out. My beautiful girl had been bent to fit as though she was just a piece of rubbish, something to be disposed of.

When I went to the hospital to identify my beautiful girl’s broken body – that was worse than not knowing. When I buried her in the cemetery and compared the size of the gravesite to the other freshly buried bodies – that was worse than not knowing.

When I drank myself to sleep on the anniversary of her sixth birthday, and realised that I would likely be doing that until my life ended – that was worse than not knowing.

The Truth And Other Lies

German scriptwriter Arango’s exceptional first novel, a highly entertaining thriller, focuses on Henry Hayden, a successful author who lives in a “nondescript coastal town.” Wealthy beyond imagination, he appears to be a loving husband to his wife, Martha, and is so humble that people automatically like him.

Gem

In truth, the vain and selfish Henry is seeing a mistress, Betty Hansen, who’s also his editor, and a few other women besides. As for those bestsellers, Henry never wrote one word—Martha did, allowing him to take credit as long as her authorial role remained a secret.

Henry’s carefully constructed world is in danger when Betty becomes pregnant. His decision to take drastic action results in an accidental death. Dodging the police inquiry and an old acquaintance determined to expose his erratic past, Henry takes charge of his own fate. Wry humor punctuates this insightful look at a soulless man.

I grew up in a small blue-collar town in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I pedaled my bicycle to the local park to collect discarded soda bottles to pay my way to the Saturday matinee, read Nancy Drew mysteries, met with friends for bowling and roller skating excursions, and buried my nose in my school books. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would become an internationally published author who has appeared on national television in the United States and Canada.

I entered the world of writing quite by accident; it was the result of my husband trying to murder me by ether asphyxiation. As I helped the homicide detective prepare my case for trial, I decided to write a book to help others understand the crazymaking world of psychopaths and how their cleverness can trap the most unsuspecting victim who has been raised in an environment of trust. I also made the decision to change an unjust divorce law that had me give my attacker half of my retirement fund and alimony.

Having made the decision to tell my story, it was now time to learn how to write. I read books, joined the International Women’s Writing Guild, and attended the Writers Retreat Workshop. I used passion, planning, patience, and persistence to see Penguin’s Berkley Books publish my book “A Dance with the Devil: A True Story of Marriage to a Psychopath.” Little did I know that when I started the story was not finished; the successful end was that several years later I did change the divorce law of California.

I feel blessed that my story has been featured on Dateline NBC, the Lifetime Television show “Final Justice” hosted by Erin Brockovich and the Canadian network VIVA in their series “The Devil You Know.” In 2009, I won the prestigious Paul H. Chapman award from the Foundation for the Improvement of Justice in Atlanta, Georgia, for my role in changing the divorce law. I believe I am one person who can make a difference and I field numerous emails from victims who thank me for writing my book while they tell me how it has positively affected their lives.

I willingly share my experience whenever the opportunity arises. I am a motivational speaker who has spoken to audiences numbering from ten to five hundred for such diverse organizations as the American Association of University Women, Soroptimists, the International Women’s Writing Guild, St. Mary’s University, Children’s Advocacy Program and Diablo Valley College and was part of an all day seminar titled “Dream It, Do It.”

I’m retired after 39 years in the business world and have found that I enjoy writing. I am now a lifetime member of the California Writers Club and currently serve as secretary for one my local branch. Writing interests include authoring and illustrating a fairy tale trilogy, putting together a book on success based on what I discovered about myself as I wrote my first book, and penning an historical novel about a strong Irish woman.

I live in Northern California with my husband of thirteen years, and our cat Sierra. My husband and I are award-winning home wine and label makers who love to travel extensively around the globe. Please visit my website http://www.adancewiththedevil.com to help others learn about psychopaths, recovery, advocacy, and writing.

Blood Street – An Urban Fantasy Novel By Carl Alves

“I like to describe Blood Street as True Blood meets The Sopranos, taking place in the streets of Philadelphia.” – Carl Alves
Blood 4

To my knowledge, vampires and mobsters have never been combined in this manner in literature (or any other form of media) before.  So, I think this makes Blood Street a fairly unique book. I’ve certainly never read a novel quite like this one before.  It was also a helluva lot of fun to right.  What I most enjoy to write (and I what I think do a really job with) are fight scenes.  This novel is chocked full of them.  Having fight scenes that involve vampires gave me quite a bit of freedom in writing them, since I didn’t have to stick to the boundaries of things that would be physically impossible for humans.  Vampires don’t have such limitations, so I was able to do quite a bit more with them.

Blood Street is a fast paced thriller. The action, the drama, and the intrigue never relent.  I wanted to write a novel that the reader would have a hard time putting down, and I hope I have achieved that with this novel.

Setting is also very important to the story.  My native Philadelphia is almost like a character in the story, and if you have ever spent any time in the city, I think you will get a kick out of it.  However, the book spans far and wide in a series of flashbacks, taking place in Spain, Norway, Brazil, Egypt, Germany and Newfoundland.    Get your passport ready and be prepared to take a trip around the globe.

Finally, the vampires that you will encounter in Blood Street are not the sparkly kind featured in Twilight.  These are real, honest to goodness nasty vampires, and the mobsters they encounter are just as mean and nasty. Get ready for an old fashioned street fight and find out who will survive on Blood Street.

The Kidney Sellers: A Journey Of Discovery In Iran

Rarely does an adventure story carry such social significance as in this groundbreaking ethnographic research book. Dr. Fry-Revere’s exploration of the medical ethics of compensating organ donors takes us deep inside Iranian culture to provide insight and understanding into how Iran has solved its kidney shortage.

Kidney

The Kidney Sellers: A Journey of Discovery in Iran addresses the question: How it is possible that in Iran there is a waiting list to be a donor, while in the United States hundreds of thousands of people have died for lack of a kidney?

Dr. Fry-Revere is the first Westerner ever to witness firsthand Iran’s organ procurement system. She shares what she discovered in this fascinating book: part diary of living in a dangerous country, part ethnographic essay, and part tale of people working together to overcome death and financial ruin.

The Kidney Sellers is a shocking, thought-provoking true story.
