The Book Of Luke: My Fight For Truth, Justice, And Liberty City

Luther 1

The raw and powerful true story of how one man invented Southern Hip-Hop, saved the First Amendment, and became a role model for his disenfranchised Miami neighborhood—living proof that one person can make a difference in the world.

A rap artist, wealthy musical entrepreneur, high school coach, and involved, active citizen—Luther Campbell’s life is a reflection of modern America. His is a tale that touches on the most pressing issues of our time: sex, creativity versus the corporate bottom line, conservative values and artistic freedom, personal rights, the gangster mentality of music companies, the rise of entrepreneurship, and the power—and responsibilities—of individuals to care for their neighborhoods, their country, and the people around them.

Born in Miami’s notorious Liberty City neighborhood, Campbell saw firsthand poverty, despair, and crime. He also discovered the gift of transformation we all possess—knowledge that has made him a passionate fighter willing to take on the most powerful forces in the name of justice and what’s right. His rap group 2 Live Crew and successful independent label made him a superstar and a multi-millionaire—and the center of enormous controversy.

The “King of Dirty Rap” who helped pioneer the worldwide phenomenon known as the Miami Bass sound infuriated the conservative mainstream and became Public Enemy #1 when hip hop crossed the color line into white America. Campbell spent over a million dollars of his own money fighting cops and prosecutors all the way to the Supreme Court to protect his—and every other artist’s—right to free speech, setting landmark legal precedents that continue to shape the entertainment industry today.

Twenty years later, Campbell uses his fame and fortune to give back to the community, saving young men from the street corners and fighting for his people. Passionate, transformative, and inspiring, The Book of Luke is his story—a living testament to hope and change.

Luther 3

Luther Campbell is the entrepreneur behind 2 Live Crew, owner of Luke Records, and former concert promoter. Luther Campbell was at one time arguably the nation’s most controversial hip-hop figure. Campbell formed the Miami-based quartet in 1987 and they were the centerpiece of a national campaign against allegedly obscene lyrics. He was embroiled in a volatile trial pitting him against then-Florida attorney general Jack Thompson.

Campbell later became a solo artist, issuing his own discs as Luke Featuring 2 Live Crew. He released Banned in the U.S.A., a parody of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.,” and I’ve Got Shit on My Mind. Campbell also published an autobiography and revamped 2 Live Crew, adding some fresh members.

They issued Back at Your Ass for the Nine-4, which peaked at number nine on the R&B chart in 1994. Campbell also won a Supreme Court decision that ruled that his parody of Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” didn’t violate the copyright held by Acuff Rose. Campbell launched the career of R&B vocalists H-Town, issuing their debut LP on Luke Records. ~ Ron Wynn, Rovi

The amazing front cover design of ‘The Writer Died’

Child Neglect relates to failure to provide a child’s basic needs. In Europe and America, there are organizations that assist in solving such problems or taking care of neglected children. In many parts of Africa, the story is entirely different. This is an emotional, touching and inspirational story of a young boy who finds himself in a similar situation.

Kumbe finds himself in a hostile environment, as a victim of divorce and neglect. An environment he witnesses the suffering and hustling his mother goes through to feed him. He was unhappy because his father was neglecting his family, spending his fortune on other women. He sees his adolescence as a struggle to win the support of his father.

At school, he was among the best students. This gives him inspiration to fight to educate himself. In a confused society, Kumbe spends a better part of his life visiting the library, reading and studying. Despite daily horrendous life he passes through, Kumbe excels to be an outstanding journalist and writer, attached to the president of his native country, Ghana, with enormous enthusiasm and optimism. However, in his lifetime as a famous journalist, his fame gives him nothing but hatred, jealousy and blackmail from an empire of deceitful enemies.

He stands strong and firm, destined to fight the cruel charismatic power of those forces haunting him. But they are stronger than him. Despite his wife’s moral and material support, Kumbe surrenders and dies mysteriously. Who and what killed him? “The Writer Died” is a truly remarkable book of hard life experience of child neglect, an indispensable and inspiring book for anyone that may find himself in a similar situation.

The writer tries to define, measure, classify, and understand what child neglect is like in Africa.

A Dance With The Devil

At the start of her relationship with the intelligent and worldly John Perry, Barbara Bentley couldn’t believe her luck, so when things didn’t add up, she struggled to ignore her doubts. She kept trying to put the pieces together, unaware that some of them were simply missing.

Devil

Even as he drained her credit, dodged her questions, manipulated her and misled her, she stayed with him, suppressing her growing suspicions. Ultimately he would try to kill her, proving himself not a protector and provider, but a predator.

This is Barbara’s courageous, compelling story, in her own words?of the slow, choking darkness that fell after the honeymoon was over, what it took to finally drive her to escape and start her life anew, and her tireless efforts to protect other women and help them learn from her example.

Bab

I grew up in a small blue-collar town in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I pedaled my bicycle to the local park to collect discarded soda bottles to pay my way to the Saturday matinee, read Nancy Drew mysteries, met with friends for bowling and roller skating excursions, and buried my nose in my school books. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would become an internationally published author who has appeared on national television in the United States and Canada.

I entered the world of writing quite by accident; it was the result of my husband trying to murder me by ether asphyxiation. As I helped the homicide detective prepare my case for trial, I decided to write a book to help others understand the crazymaking world of psychopaths and how their cleverness can trap the most unsuspecting victim who has been raised in an environment of trust. I also made the decision to change an unjust divorce law that had me give my attacker half of my retirement fund and alimony.

Having made the decision to tell my story, it was now time to learn how to write. I read books, joined the International Women’s Writing Guild, and attended the Writers Retreat Workshop. I used passion, planning, patience, and persistence to see Penguin’s Berkley Books publish my book “A Dance with the Devil: A True Story of Marriage to a Psychopath.” Little did I know that when I started the story was not finished; the successful end was that several years later I did change the divorce law of California.

I feel blessed that my story has been featured on Dateline NBC, the Lifetime Television show “Final Justice” hosted by Erin Brockovich and the Canadian network VIVA in their series “The Devil You Know.” In 2009, I won the prestigious Paul H. Chapman award from the Foundation for the Improvement of Justice in Atlanta, Georgia, for my role in changing the divorce law. I believe I am one person who can make a difference and I field numerous emails from victims who thank me for writing my book while they tell me how it has positively affected their lives.

I willingly share my experience whenever the opportunity arises. I am a motivational speaker who has spoken to audiences numbering from ten to five hundred for such diverse organizations as the American Association of University Women, Soroptimists, the International Women’s Writing Guild, St. Mary’s University, Children’s Advocacy Program and Diablo Valley College and was part of an all day seminar titled “Dream It, Do It.”

I’m retired after 39 years in the business world and have found that I enjoy writing. I am now a lifetime member of the California Writers Club and currently serve as secretary for one my local branch. Writing interests include authoring and illustrating a fairy tale trilogy, putting together a book on success based on what I discovered about myself as I wrote my first book, and penning an historical novel about a strong Irish woman.

I live in Northern California with my husband of thirteen years, and our cat Sierra. My husband and I are award-winning home wine and label makers who love to travel extensively around the globe.
