The I-Threes: The Golden Voices Behind Bob Marley

RIT 2Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths

Music is like my passport and water I need daily when travelling. I can’t do without it because it gives me inspiration. It’s great to have musicians and players of instruments around us. Music fills the courts of heaven as heavenly beings praise our Lord and Creator. When God created the world, the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy, that’s what the Bible says at (Job 38:7)

Music fills the courts of heaven as heavenly beings praise our Lord and Creator. When God created the world, the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy, that’s what the Bible says at (Job 38:7)

You will know the I-THREES if you love music because they were highly talented musicians supporting Bob Marley as back vocals, in the history of Jamaican music. Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths, knew each other long before they became internationally known.

Marcia Griffiths was already a star before the group I-Threes were formed. Her duet recordings with Bob Andy, which included “Young, Gifted and Black,” had brought her international attention, when she invited Judy Mowatt, who had previously sung with ‘The Gaylettes,’ and Rita Anderson, to support her on a recording with Andy. This invitation brought the three women together.

In Jamaica, that time was ‘The Wailers’ formed in 1963, which was a vocal group consisting of Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, Bunny Livingston, Bob Marley, Peter McIntosh, and Cherry Smith. Livingston later became Bunny Wailer and McIntosh simply Peter Tosh. In 1966, Braithwaite, Kelso, and Smith left the group leaving the trio of Livingston, Marley, and McIntosh.

Shortly after the departure of McIntosh and Livingston from the group, Bob Marley asked the three women to sing on his recording, Jah Live. They continued to sing for Bob Marley as back vocals for the next ten years. Later Bob Marley married Rita Andersen, whose original country of birth was Cuba. Surprisingly, both Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh became successful in their solo careers.

In early 1975, the I-Threes joined Marley for a tour as opening act for ‘The Jackson Five.’ The I-Threes continued to sing with Bob Marley until and after his death. But that wasn’t the end of the careers of the women, the three pursued a successful solo career.

The Successful Music Career Of Winston Rodney, Aka Burning Spear

Spear 2

In a display of true humbleness, Burning Spear, is no doubt one of the greatest reggae artists the world has ever known. Born as Winston Rodney, on Ist March 1945, in Saint Ann’s Bay in Jamaica, musicians such as “The Maytals” and “Bob Marley and the Wailers” influenced him.

According to him, it was his encounter with Bob Marley, that ignited his life to fame from 1969. He has then made a couple of songs, but doesn’t know where to start. Then Bob told him to go to “Studio One” and he did. Today among great reggae artists, his music can be heard in every part of the world.

In the lives of individuals, many do remember the mistake one does, than all the good things the person has done. But Burning Spear didn’t forget the direction Bob gave him. He gave credit to Bob Marley in his song “As it is” taken from his album ” Calling Rastafari.” He sings, “I start singing in the late sixties. Told about Studio One by Bob Marley.” But who is actually this man called Burning Spear and why did he choose such a name unto himself?

I never had the opportunity to interview Mr. Rodney, like other great reggae stars, but just as he has been following the footsteps of the great Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King etc, believing God send them to help black people, the same way, I have been following his music for a very long time.

Like the waves retreating into the sea, I went back and compiled the names of some of his old and new songs, to find out the message of Burning Spear’s music. Yes “He stands strong, The world should know, that Man in the hills, Far over, Calling Rastafari to Jah’s Kingdom. His mistress music don’t sell out and Christopher Columbus can’t change his Identity and Fittest of the fittest has made him a Free man.”

Being inspired by the late Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, Burning Spear put the title of Jomo Kenyatta (Burning Spear ) unto himself as his name. From there on, the flame of the spear is unquenchable, singing about slavery, discrimination and praising men like Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Kwame Nkrumah and Martin Luther King etc. His reason of cherishing these men are simple and logical, because they paved the way for I and I (Africans) to be recognised.

Spear 1Burning Spear showed his love for Africa from his great hit “Greetings” from the album “Far Over,” after his trip to Africa. Greetings Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Addis Ababa.” He said. He lamented bitterly about blacks in the United States of America who have no intention and respect for the culture. As if they have forgotten their history, some even hate to be referred to as Africans. “Even though they say I’m a Yankee” Burning Spear said he still loves them because they are his brothers and sisters.

After over thirty years of his prolific music career, the tireless Burning Spear surprisingly after his 27th album special, released in 1999, Calling Rastafari, which won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2000. In 2003, he released another album captioned “Free man” with great numbers such as “Trust, Not Guilty, loved for who I am etc”

Despite that MTV doesn’t promote reggae music, Burning Spear has excelled to be one of the world’s famous musicians. His songs speak of its self. Truly, the achievements of Burning Spear, in the field of reggae, shall remain in the music history for ever.

Twitter: The Cheating Games Many Users Play On That Social Media

Twitter 4

‘Twitter is an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short 140-character messages called “tweets”. Registered users can read and post tweets, but unregistered users can only read them.’ That’s the sweetest and shortest introduction of this famous social media, business men, entrepreneurs and people from all walks of life engaged for their livelihood.

On Twitter activities are tweeted, mails are exchanged and friendships are made. However, since every society there are both good and bad people, the same way the social media is occupied by both good and bad people, including people that take the advantage to cheat and those that do desperate things just to gain followers.

I registered on Twitter in 2011. Among all the social media, Twitter was the one I gave less attention to, concentrating much on Facebook. It seems I didn’t know the worth or significance of the Twitter that time. I got notification of every follower, but ignored without following back. Probably I wasn’t  even aware that I need to follow back, because I was green and amateur to social media.

After learning much about Twitter, it was too late and most of those that followed me were gone and when I became more serious on Twitter, following back my new followers, I realized that the social media I had ignored for over two years, worth more than ‘silver and gold.’ Frankly speaking, it is not easy to build or solicit for followers. People are crying to be followed on Twitter, because the more followers you have, the evidence that you are either celebrity or an important person in the society.

The hard way to generate followers genuinely without purchase, has increased dishonesty and cunning activities on Twitter. Out of the blue comes a message of followers. You want to be honest and sincere, so you follow them back, but after two or three days, those you sincerely followed them, unfollow you to increase the number of their followers. Some even do that the same day. Most people who do that profile reads “Following 1,257, Followers 315. Instead of them ‘unfollow’ those who aren’t following them, they unfollow the follower, they think aren’t important to follow.

Thanks to ‘Tweepdash’ which gives me information of those unfaithful ones to weed them out from my yard. On Twitter you see profiles like ‘Be Distinct.’ He wants to fly but has no wings and wants to be a celebrity by means of Twitter. He follows you and a day after he unfollows. This is the style many Twitter users adopt to increase the number of their followers and be ‘distinct.’

I wonder why people make a fun of themselves in this manner and think they are very intelligent. Greed is everywhere and wherever it exists, corruption and dishonesty rule. People pay for book review to be given a good review and many writers who hate to do such things, are merely seen as bad writers, because they see no review yet for their books.

I will always be happy even if I have one follower, because there is a reason that person followed me. I’m fortunate to have great authors such as Joel Friedlander, CNN’s Jim Clancy and musicians such as Chuck D of Public Enemy and Digital Underground following me on Twitter.
