10 Expectations of School Canteens

Original article published by:                  Momma 2

School 4Running a school canteen can be a tough and thankless job so firstly we would like to say “Thank You” to all of the volunteers and workers that give their time to our schools.

However, just as we expect a standard of education from our schools we should also be expecting a standard of nutrition from the school canteens. (When we say “we” we mean parents, teachers, society and the government)

Why should we all care?

Well parents should care because we are parents and we want our children to be happy and healthy. Teachers should care because when our children go into the school yard and eat unhealthy food they come back to the classroom and the teachers are on the receiving end of the mood swings. Society should care because “un”health care is costing us a fortune, plus our tax dollars are going into education and we should be expecting a good return on investment.

The Government should care … the Government should care like crazy … because health care and unemployment cost the Government big dollars. (Let’s face it, if the Government are spending big dollars on the sick and unemployed they will have less dollars to spend on the country and themselves)

So here are the top 10 expectations of school canteens we should all have:

  1. No added sugar – with so many natural, healthy alternatives this is so unnecessary. Don’t know how to cook with honey or brown rice syrup instead of sugar? Ask us!
  2. Stop using white wheat flour – Approximately 75% of Momma Green’s clients test positive for wheat intolerance. Imagine 75% of school children filling up on white wheat sausage rolls, pies, pasties, sandwiches? It has chaos written all over it! Don’t know how to cook without white wheat flour, check out our recipes.
  3. No high fructose syrup – high fructose syrup is just as bad as sugar and has exactly the same behavioral consequences.
  4. No maize – Just as we are seeing 75% of the community with wheat intolerance problems we are also seeing approximately 65% of the community experiencing an intolerance to maize.
  5. No Soft Drink – None at all, it doesn’t matter what type of drink it is they are all dangerous to the health of our children. No sports drinks, no energy drinks, no canned drinks! Let’s get some juice and smoothie bars happening. Don’t forget water, good quality, filtered water should e freely available in every classroom, after all, no water = no learning.
  6. No Coffee – No doubt some teens love the coffee high but the coffee low is frying their brains in the afternoon. If teachers want coffee put a coffee machine in the teacher’s lounge but coffee is not helping teachers or students focus in the afternoons.
  7. Don’t be a corner store – At a corner store or petrol station we expect to find highly processed, pre-packaged items like ice-blocks, chips and lollies. That is the reason many parents choose to avoid these stores but when you put them into our schools it makes it impossible for our children to avoid them, help us out here and take them out of our schools.
  8. No colors, flavors, preservatives or e-numbers – If our kids can’t read it, pronounce it or understand it we don’t want it in their mouths. Let’s be honest most adults can’t pronounce these ridiculously long names but we can tell you what the majority of them mean … behavioral and learning difficulties that’s what. Doesn’t this seem counter-productive?
  9. A plant based menu – Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, lots of home-made ice-blocks, juices, smoothies, Mexican and Italian food which kids love and are so easy to add vegetables to. Fruit salad, crudites and dips, sweet potato chips … the list is endless … ask the kids what healthy foods they love and cook that, kids are creative you will be surprised by some of their ideas.
  10. Lastly and most importantly, Health over profit – With a lack of volunteers many schools are taking the easy way out and outsourcing their canteens, this is akin to privatization of the health care industry and deregulation of banking, put simply when money is the focus and people are a secondary concern money is going to win. So how do we fix this little dilemma?

How about Government incentives for canteens that adopt a better way of doing things? Wouldn’t this help everyone? It would help our canteens get creative, our children would be healthier and better able to learn, our teachers would be able to teach more effectively and as parents we would be picking up healthier, happier children that have been educated in the classroom and nourished during meal time. Isn’t that what we should all be expecting from our schools?

The Fight Against Terrorism Is The Responsibility Of Everyone, Not The Police Alone

France police ready for action against terrorism

Do you know the reason some people like to bully other people? Because they see fear in the eyes of their victims. Terrorists are cruel, pitiless, savage and people without conscience, because their aim is to destroy, cause panic and fear in public and to kill. When they are successfully with such atrocities, they feel happy and say it loud “Allahu Akbar-God is great.

As a matter of fact, I don’t know the kind of God terrorists worship. If they claim ‘God is great,’ then they shouldn’t kill for a great God. It’s because the God they worship is a ‘WEAK GOD’ the reason they kill for him. There is no normal person on earth, who would put explosives on his body, enter where defenseless people, including children are and detonate to kill them.

I don’t have friends and the little friends near me are all scared to die, because of the nature of articles I write. Those I’ve lost contact with, because of a missing phone, wouldn’t like to give me back their numbers. The fear that when I’m in trouble, they may probably be implicated, because I have their numbers, is haunting them.

I feel very sorry for them, because the coward dies million times before their real death. In fact the only courageous man ever to live in this world that has been my best friend, is Holland’s Scientist and Micro-surgeon, Professor Johan Van Dongen. He is brave enough to tell the world that: Aids and Ebola were medical crimes against Africa.

Fear, is a psychological disease many people including Africans have. It is this fear that Islamic terrorists have observed among nations. Depending on the fears of people, terrorists use it as advantage to strike. The Charlie Hebdo deadly attack  and the recent  events in France; leaving dozens dead in shootings and explosions, are some of the terrible things terrorists can do.

The significant question is: If everyone wants to go heaven but nobody is prepared to die, because of fear, who is going to help the police to thwart terrorists actions? The harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few. Terrorism is a universal crime planned against humanity, the police therefore needs help from the general public to make investigations easier.

How can we make it easier for the police to fight against terrorism? Since terrorism poses a grave threat to national security and the lives of individual, the public has invaluable role to play in the fight against terrorists, violent extremists and other criminals. The public shouldn’t keep any information about terrorism. The police are there to help every time and in this crucial time. This is the time everyone should play the role as an investigator and informant.

More Hatred For Foreigners In Belgium Aftermath The France Attacks

MoroccoNot every Moroccan or Muslim is a terrorist and not every African is a criminal, but whenever terrorists strike or an African commits a crime, all eyes are on foreigners as criminals or  terrorists.

The recent  events in France; leaving dozens dead in shootings and explosions, have generated pure hatred to foreigners in Belgium. Belgium is a country integration is very poor, compared to other European countries, yet they do their best for foreigners

According to a Moroccan woman who visited the hospital with her daughter, the day terrorists attacked France, she saw the anger on the face of the doctor who was attending her child. At one point her daughter’s head hit an object when the doctor lifts up the child.

At work, she greets but no one responds. It was really a psychological torture for her to find herself in the center of such hatred, when she wasn’t part of France attacks or not a terrorist.

Once listening to a radio debate over Muslims in Brussels, a man suggested that the Muslim community in Brussels needs a swimming pool for Muslims alone.  This Moroccan woman who doesn’t agree to what the man said, called to tell the man “You are in Belgium, go to Morocco and build your swimming pool there.”

Unfortunately, after the France attacks, she is now a victim of hatred, with many others, because she is a Moroccan. It’s completely wrong to hate someone over crime other people commit. I don’t hate any European for all the bad things they did against Africa, thus; I wouldn’t be happy for someone to hate me, because of a crime a foreigner commits.

Do You Ever Dream Of Playing A Role In A Movie?

film 2We all enjoy watching exciting movies and our favorite film stars, to lively up ourselves, as a source of entertainment, after an exhausting day from work or to create a happy union with families, especially at weekends.

We learn a lot from the movies we watch, as they play with our emotions. Sometimes we do cry, get frightened or laugh our hearts out on some films, since some of the films are very hilarious.

As we enjoy watching films or entertain ourselves, have you ever wished or considered to play a role in a film or be an actor? Days back in the early seventies, there was a columnist, “Nana Ama advices you,” in one of the leading Ghanaian newspapers.

That could be the first time I read my letter in a newspaper when Nana Ama gave me the advice of how to become a successful film actor after I enquired from her what steps to take to become a film actor.

I watched my favorite television films, ‘Bonanza, The Mod Squad, High Chaparral, Cisco and Pancho, The Sea Way, The Saint, Department S, The Sea Way, The Persuaders etc, without the opportunity to reach Hollywood.

However, one day my dreams were fulfilled locally, when my father, a journalist and a documentary film producer and director, working at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, offered me roles in two of his films, ‘Cocoa in Ghana and Backyard Industries,’ in the seventies. I was very happy indeed.

I believe that everyone has a talent or born with a talent. Some discover that talent early and others late. Unfortunately, some of these dreams can never be a reality, because there is no means, especially when you are born without a silver spoon in the mouth. But we can always contribute to shaping the life and pattern of people positively in the society. I am therefore happy to be a writer.

Can Home Cooking Build A Happy Marriage?

Cooking 4

Falling in love is a wonderful and magical experience between two people. The chemistry is strange and sometimes very complicated. The experience differs in many ways but the commonest are happiness, restlessness and strong emotions. However; falling in love doesn’t always guarantee a successful marriage or living together. Frankly speaking, according to statistics many are getting divorce more than getting together.

To build and support successful marriage or relationships, many partners read books written as a guide to happy marriage. Despite hundreds of books counseling couples, lovers are constantly in pain, emotionally and psychologically, affected by painful love affairs. The causes of divorces or separations vary, lack of attention, sex, cheating, quarrels, financial matters and others. However; few things many never thought of as destroyer of marriages is the lack of cooking at home and lack of prevention of early sex in teenage relationship.

Many couples friendship began at school as teenagers before they settled. In principle, it is always good for people to study and know each other very well, before entering into relations or love affairs. But on moral issues entering into relationships as teenagers isn’t a wise thing to do. Children as young as thirteen and fourteen indulged in caressing and kissing. This is seen as normal in advanced countries but in Africa, it is not permitted.

Most of these early relationships end up in separate ways or settling together. When they finally get married, the love isn’t strong as before. That’s where the problems begin. In this case, the marriage doesn’t go far. Why? The reason is simple and logical. Both have seen their nakedness too much as teenagers to the extent that they no longer value their precious bodies as adults. No happiness and the essence of enjoying a happy relationship is completely ruined.

Here the dignity and the worthiness of the woman have been neglected and abused by the man. It is always the man that causes the breakup because he wants something new. Many start to cheat and stayed late at work in illicit love affairs. A woman or man may find the real happiness in life, marriage, living together or in relationships, when they enter into love affairs as adults than as teenagers.

Any man or woman who doesn’t know how to cook before getting into a relationship or marriage may not fully enjoy the relationship. There is always a guarantee for a happy marriage when one of the partners knows how to cook but if both can’t cook means the marriage have a bleak future. Imagine a family depending always on fast food or tin foods. How would a husband feel after a day’s hard work, comes home to sit behind the dining table and be served with can spaghetti, with that marshy tomato sauce? Many enjoy that but that’s health hazard.

A man facing such situation may never be happy. Some may speak against it but many hide the way they feel when upset. Since he can’t live with that any longer he starts to seek his interest in other places. That’s where the cheating starts. If the one he is seeing can’t provide him those delicious meals he is missing from his previous partner, the relationship automatically comes to an end.

It is therefore very essential for both men and women to learn or know how to cook before getting into a relationship or marriage. Getting familiar with cooking isn’t a difficult issue. There are thousands of books and adult schools for cooking. Time factor is always an issue. Many may not have the time to go to a cooking school after work. Here a cooking book is very useful.

Just follow the instructions on how to cook and next thing is the delicious meal on the dining table. You may not be perfect at your first attempt but remember practice makes man perfect. Besides, cultivating the habit of cooking at home saves a lot of money. I am happily married for the past twenty years. When my wife is busy at work, I do the cooking for the children. This is the only way to share the secrets of why our marriage is stronger than ever. I am a very good cook apart from my writing career.

Poem Of Awareness: When You Are Born Black

Born

The Bible says God created Man in his own image

But many don’t see the black man in God’s image, so

When you are born black, you are a victim of slavery and Apartheid

When you are born black, you are victim of racism and discrimination

When you are born black, don’t trust World Health Organization and Center for Diseases Control and Prevention

When you are born black, you a weapon of mass destruction

When you are born black, Belgium will give you Ebola

When you are born black, Holland will give you AIDS

When you are born black, your home is Uncle Tom’s Cabin

When you are born black, contaminated vaccine is your gift

When you are born black, Germany will use you for an experiment

When you are born black, flee from the ghost of King Leopold II

When you are born black, America will use you for biological warfare

When you are born black, many will see you as a suspect, so stop committing crime

When you are born black, you will be a victim of cheap labour

When you are born black, pray without ceasing, because you’ve got a high mountain to climb

When you born black show love and care to your fellow brothers and sisters

When you are born black, watch your steps, because many hate you

When you are black, pray to meet good friends who don’t care about colour

Because they will make you happy without contemplating of committing suicide.

Culture Or Religion Should Not Be Used By Man To Impose Duties

Taliban

Domination is not part of any true religion: It’s only a cruel and heartless man will be happy to see his wife dressed like that in the scorching sun.

Many writers are inspired by other writers. I get my inspiration by reading the Bible and comments by my readers. The reason many times I make reference to the Gospel. In the beginning, God created everything and gave man dominion over all things, but the greed of man hasn’t only brought hardships, sin, and rebellion in this word but also domination and crime.

In many parts of the world, women can’t have education, they can’t wear trousers, they can’t work, they can’t drive and they have to cover themselves from head to toe. Why, because religion says so? If women are to stay at home without education, who are going to be the doctors, engineers, and pilots after all the men have been killed in war?

“A woman is a flower in the middle of the garden and the man is the fence around it.” This is one of the African proverbs indicating how precious a woman is. Unfortunately, it is now the opposite. Women now sit outside the fence without any protection, suffering all kinds of tragedies, including rape, sexual harassment, domestic violence, and domination.

The greed of man is so enormous that it has no boundary, shifting to religion. Many Muslim men marry girls underage and they think it’s okay. How can a forty-five-year-old man marry a thirteen or fourteen-year-old girl? This is a crime. Such person should be thrown into jail for the rest of his life because he has slept with a girl who can be his daughter. They force to marry and when the woman says no, they throw acid on her face.

When Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, especially in Helmand Province, women have to cover their entire body. They are caned and stoned in public as if the executioners have never committed any sin from childbirth. On October 29, 2015, I wrote an article discouraging ‘Female Circumcision’ because it’s barbarism and cruelty against women. I received only two comments on this article but one of them touched me to share this article.

I quote “Any culture or religion should not be used by man to impose duties, discriminating, disparities and unfounded, but to protect the creatures, to give them serenity and comfort in suffering, indicate paths of joy, respecting the nature of corporeal living, always in agreement with this nature,” says erospea.wordpress.com , a lady hosting an Italian blog.

We have been told and heard many times that Islam is a religion of peace, but some people have shown us the cruelty and oppressive nature of Islam against women and beheading of Christians. Imagine in an Islamic country, which women are not allowed to mingle with men or work, so the shops have been taken over by men that sell women underwear and bra. The male shop assistant stares at the woman finding the right size of bra. What a world of hypocrisy?

Religion doesn’t mean oppression. If the Bible or Koran demands women to be submissive to their husbands doesn’t mean that women are deemed to be inferior to men or should be oppressed. The Koran says “There is no salvation for a man or a nation who allows women to rule over them.” I don’t think so. Men have dominated man to his injury, they should, therefore, give women the chance to heal the world.
