Black History: Once Upon A Time In America

Years after slavery, African-Americans are still struggling to be real Americans

Elizabeth Ann Eckford, a student, and a key figure at the Little Rock Central High School is pictured being followed, booed and yelled at by a mob of whites. She was among the group of the nine African-American students famous for having desegregated the school in 1957. A closer look at the lady on the right, you can see the chilling, unreasonable dislike in her eyes. This reflects on the history of Apartheid Education in America.

In the deep sea, the big fish has no sympathy for the helpless small fish. They intimidate the small ones and always try to eat them up. That was once the hostile situation in America years back, in every sector, including the educational sector, against African-Americans.

It’s very embarrassing to see such images in America, a country that  believes in democracy, above all they say: In God We Trust.

The more disturbing factor is, America provided  a “safe haven” in the United States for Nazis criminals and their collaborators after World War II, yet subjected African-Americans to abuse, discrimination, lynching, experimentation, and slavery.

Abolition of slavery is a fact recorded in history, but the reality is, it still exists in many places around the globe, including America today because we live in a violent and corrupt society.

How many years now did America start fighting against an illegal drug entering its sovereignty? Because of corruption, the country is plagued by cocaine and other dangerous drugs, drastically taking its toll on many citizens.

There was a time, if you are an honest hard worker, with distinguished achievements in the society, you will be awarded, but now those who commit serious crimes against humanity are those that receive that awards, including the Nobel Prize. Among the ring of liars, if you want to remain different and live in truth, you will eventually become an enemy.

Do you feel this world is okay? Are you happy about the turmoil and the path of doom the world has taken? Why politicians fighting for power when they don’t have any means to save this world? Nothing in this world seems to be going better or doing well. Everything has taken the wrong path.

Whether Africans were used as Guinea pigs in testing drugs, whether Aids, Ebola, Lassa and other deadly diseases, were bio-weapons against Africans to depopulate the continent, or whether African-Americans were used for experimentation, the Black man has survived today. That power wasn’t strong enough to wipe out the black race.

Black history is a sad song and a rough road. Even though it’s like an image hanging on the wall, the Black man should change that sad song to a happy song and straighten up that rough road ahead of him. We should let go hatred, jealousy, racism, racial discrimination and hypocrisy to embrace love in our community.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” —I Corinthians 13:4-8a.

Health: How Africans Survived On Traditional Medicine Long Before The White Man’s Medicine

Neem 1

The magic tree called Neem

In 1832, the Scottish merchant McGregor Laird led an expedition to the Niger Valley and out of 48 people that accompanied on the expedition, 37 lost their lives. These experiences led to the belief that Europeans could not survive in coastal West Africa, which came to be known as ‘The White Man’s Grave.’ Because Europeans noticed that Africans survived much better in the region from these fevers. Despite malaria killing many Africans as well, they acquired resistance to malaria in their childhood, baffling European physicians.

The loss of 37 expeditioners not only revealed that Europeans can’t settle in Africa that time but also demanded how Africans had been able to survive on that harsh continent of deadly malaria? From generation to generation, ancestors pass on their expertise in herbal medicine preparations to families. One of Africa’s powerful concoctions against malaria is prepared from leaves of a neem tree.

The neem tree, biological name (Azadirachta indica) is a unique tree, and the leaves are the most complex leaves on the planet. The neem tree has over 130 different biologically an active compound. The trees grow in tropical and semi-tropical regions.

About the Neem Tree:

Neem (Azadirachta indica) is a tree in the mahogany family. Native to India and throughout Southeast Asia, neem trees grows in tropical and semi-tropical regions. The neem tree grows quickly and can reach heights over 100 ft tall. With its surprising variety of uses and benefits, the neem tree is known as the ‘cure of sickness’ in West Africa, because of its extreme bitterness.

The main components of neem leaves include protein (7.1%), carbohydrates (22.9%), minerals, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin C, and carotene. But the leaves also contain glutamic acid, tyrosine, aspartic acid, alanine, praline, glutamine and cystine-like amino acids, and several fatty acids. Without toothpaste or brush, a piece of chewed neem tree gives a clean teeth brush and fresh mouth each morning. Another life-saving tree is the Kuntan tree (Uapacca Guiniensis.) The cover of the tree was used to treat fractured bones.

Enjoying corn porridge without sugar

The miracle berry or fruit , known as Asaba in the central region of Ghana, serves sugar because it contains a protein called miraculin that tastes sweet enough to replicate the effect of sugar.

There was no sugar, yet our ancestors enjoyed herbal tea and corn meal porridge. A plant which bears small reddish fruit, called miracle fruit, serves as a substitute for sugar. The fruit contains a protein called miraculin that tastes sweet enough to replicate the effect of sugar. After eating berry fruit, everything sour, such as lemon or vinegar tastes sweet in the mouth.

Africa is endowed with many plants that can be used for medicinal. Some of the herbs heal high blood pressure, skin diseases, sore throat, arthritis, digestive problems etc. Many of the drugs consumed throughout the world for health purposes, were manufactured from herbs taken from Africa and Asia because those herbs grow in tropical countries. For example, African ginger is a very powerful medicine.

Many around the world wonder how Africans live, especially those in the villages without electricity. Frankly speaking, there is everything available to make life easy for them just like those living in modern cities. Before health centers were built our ancestors deliver babies at home successfully and the child’s umbilical cord was treated with herbal medicine.

Food Preservation in Africa

Have you ever wonder how Africans preserved food without electricity? If there is no electricity, there wouldn’t be any fridge or storage facilities but food is best preserved in such a way that it doesn’t get rotten. With smoldering wood, generating intensive heat, which adds a layer of desiccation to preserving qualities, fish, meat and other sea foods are smoked. The heat of the fire dehydrates all the liquid from the fish or meat and makes it last longer without rotten.

Salt and the sun also play a major role in traditional food preservation in Africa. For example, fish are well preserved with salt and Cocoa beans are spread in the sun to dry for many days, before they are exported or used to manufacture cocoa products, such as chocolates, drinks, beverages and body lotions consumed locally.

Fish smoking is one of the oldest traditional ways of food preservation in Ghana.

Green Planet: A Poem By Lori Triggs

World 1

At one time our planet was colorful as lush with plants even flowers

And towering trees beautiful I can see,

The planet was filled with animals even birds more species that was plentiful

While the mammals and fish filled the oceans even waters majestic,

The oceans with lakes even rivers as the waters where aqua or

Torques blue lovely green was a fantasy.

Now our planet is filled with tons trash on the streets even

At the garbage dumps filled to the top to no end,

The planet not colorful or lush with plants even flowers

And towering trees it becoming a waste land of dirt and mud,

Even homes plus businesses filled with humans to see

The animals even birds is getting scarce means no food or wildlife,

While the mammals and fish are finding up dead in the waters

Or land means no food or sea life.

The oceans with lakes even rivers as the waters are brown,

Or nasty green will be unsafe to drink this is not a fantasy.

We should help the planet even ourselves by recycling

bottles, paper, cardboard, cans even glass in recycling centers,

Make green homes by using reused materials granite, tiles, wood,

Bottles, paper, cardboard, cans even glass solar tubes, & solar energy

Plus solar water, everything energy officiant,

The cars we use should be hydrogen, solar, electric or hybrid

So go green not brown if we keep what we are doing we are all dead!
