  1. Sing, play, and talk with your child. Children love to hear your voice. It doesn’t matter if you sing on or off key. Interaction is what children crave.
  2. Read aloud to your child every day. Reading to your child is the next best thing to a hug. Bring books along to the dentist, doctor, or on other errands where there will be some wait time. Read to children as part of a bedtime ritual. Routines are reassuring.
  3. Have a variety of reading material that is easily available. Place books in baskets in different parts of the home, including in the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and TV areas. This allows children to choose books on their own and makes cleaning up after themselves easy. Consider putting together a backpack prefilled with books to grab and go for short or long distance travel.
  4. Read many types of books. Children love learning about their world, how things work, and all kinds of animals. Reading for information is important for childrens’ future. They love books with rhyme, silly words, and fairy tales. Start bringing your children to the library when they are young, and visit regularly.
  5. Pace the reading. Read with expression! Change the quality and volume of sound while reading to make listening to stories fun. Take your time, don’t rush. Stop now and then during reading time to let your child think about the story. Ask questions to encourage thinking.
  6. Repeat. Children enjoy reading favorite stories over and over again, even after they are able to repeat all the words by heart. Encourage them to read their favorite lines with you. Point to the words as you read them together. Talk about your child’s favorite characters in different contexts, like “What do you think The Cat in the Hat would do if he was in our kitchen right now?”
  7. Find words and letters everywhere. As early as age two, children may identify logos they see often at home and other places they travel. This important milestone is the beginning of the knowledge that print has meaning. Cereal boxes are great to use for finding letters and logos, as are menus, calendars and occupant mail. Take turns finding the same letter with your child. Write to do and grocery lists together. Have him make words with magnetic letters on the refrigerator.
  8. Help your child learn about letter sounds. Show her how to write her name. A child’s name is her first “stamp” on the world. Say the sounds of each letter as you print them. Sing an alphabet song and include the sounds of the letter in the song, for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BELlZKpi1Zs . Encourage your child to write but try not to correct him. Beginning writing should be playful.
  9. Limit tube time. Select TV programs with your child in advance. Watch TV and talk about the programs together. Monitor time on other electronic devices. Video games are good fun and many of them are educational, but balance is needed. Too much close work does not give the eyes enough exercise.
  10. Get involved with your child’s school. You are your child’s first and best advocate. Get to know your child’s teacher. Find out how you can support your child in her academic goals. If at all possible, volunteer time in the classroom. Work schedules make this difficult, but advance planning can help make this happen.

You are your children’s first teacher. Reading to them is a great start in preparation for life in school and beyond.

Keep On Writing Until The Bones Are Rotten

Bones 2Photo credit: Pixgood.com

It’s unfortunate that many have already given up or quit writing, because the book which they thought could make them bestselling author, has totally disappointed them, terminating the desire to be a good author.

In a world of which thousands of books are published yearly and affected by the rapid decline of reading, many are struggling in the field of writing with shattered dreams.

What is making the situation worse, is the sick habit of some famous writers, that often used Social Media platforms to discredit other writers’ work, as a way to draw readers’ attention to their works or gain more recognition and fame.

Again some unknown and new writers that want their voice heard or recognition, resort to undermining other writer’s work on social platforms as well. I have read such distasteful comments about other writers over and over wondering: Why some people live with greed and selfishness, aiming to achieve whatever they are looking for?

As a matter of fact, if one is intelligent to write a book, that intelligence is enough to teach the person that “Success comes to people that wish others success. They should make research and find out: “Whoever digs a hole against someone will surely fall into that hole himself.”

As an aspiring writer, what pushed you into writing? What are the motives that triggered your desire into book publishing, money or fame? I’m interested in these questions, because if you’re an aspiring or new writer, entering into the field of publishing, with the desire of becoming a millionaire over night, then I’m sorry, you will end up disappointed and depressed.

This is the situation many aspiring writers are facing today. What many writers have failed to realise is that: Stepping into the field of book publishing as a new writer, is like a stranger making proposal to a woman he finds attractive. She doesn’t know you, she therefore needs more time to know your background and where you come from.

This investigation or proposal may last a month or years, depending on what kind the lady is. After her investigations, if she is satisfied, she will accept the man’s proposal and marry him. The same way it takes a short or very long time for readers to accept or reject your book as an author.

If you have this in mind, as a new writer, before entering the field of book publishing, you will always be happy, easy and relaxed, no matter how poor or fast your books are moving. There shouldn’t be a competition in book publishing. If your book doesn’t suit this generation, another generation will accept it. The reason many writers become famous years after death.

There is a time for everything. A time to sow and to harvest, sickness and healthiness. Thus; there will be a time the underestimated shall be estimated. Let this article encourage you, if you have already given up or decided to do so. Even though, writing is considered to be one of the most dangerous professions, let the writing continue unabated until the bones are rotten.

What Is It Like To Be A Woman?

Proverb 4

One of Marilyn Monroe’s quote which reveals how unique, special and different a woman is.

I am a married man for the past 21 years, yet I can’t say I know a lot about women. My wife gets angry with me sometimes, when I know I’m right and she is wrong. But since I don’t want to lean upon my understanding, which may be wrong, I quickly apologize to her to create a happy atmosphere once again.

I work at a place with over forty female teachers. I ‘m always scared to smile, paranoid may be, because I don’t want any of the ladies there to have in mind that I want her. I therefore maintain a serious mood at my work place. Unfortunately, I was doing more harm to myself than good.

In the first year, I realized pure hatred from some of the teachers towards me. Action speaks louder than words, so don’t ask me how I know that they hate me please. In fact, some people can’t control their emotions when they hate you. Many pretend they haven’t seen me, even though I’m very close to those tempting bodies, fashion and magic perfumes.

The hate towards me increased to a certain level that I decided to find solution immediately, to present myself a faithful and trustful person among them. I started greeting those I’ve never greeted at the school before. Some just walked away without response but some gave me recognition and responded. That encouraged me to continue the greetings.

Did I forget myself as an African, when there is a proverb in Africa that says a woman is a beautiful flower in the middle of the garden and the man is the fence around it? Did I also forget that in Mexico, it is said men that treat women very good were brought up by queens? “If she’s amazing, she won’t be easy. If she’s easy, she won’t be amazing. If she’s worth it, you won’t give up. If you give up, you’re not worthy. … Truth is, everybody is going to hurt you; you just gotta find the ones worth suffering for.” Did I also forget this great quote from the reggae legend Bob Marley?

Once you have a clean heart and ready to change things in your life, you will be successful. I became friendlier with broad smile on my face daily. Once I met one of the ladies who hate me most, with a cup of coffee in one hand and books in the other hand, trying to open a door and I rushed like the late Christopher Reeve in his Super Man series, to open the door for her.

Proverb

An African proverb revealing the greatness and importance of a woman in the society.

It was that very day, she asked of my name and she told me hers. Since then we communicate regularly and laugh over many things. In life, never judge a woman wrongly. Like every human being, some are introvert and others extrovert. Some may be very quiet but that doesn’t mean that they hate you, while others quickly engage in conversation with you.

So what is it like to be a woman? Don’t feel great or superior over a woman. Respect her opinion and don’t underestimate her. That will open the way to know her very well to understand the sort of creatures women are.
