I’m sure every writer, once or many times in his or her life time may receive a mail from someone interested in his work or articles. I have received hundreds of mails of admiration over my writings. One of the mails I received recently touched me after reading. I decided to publish it…

As writer, there are certain things you need to keep in mind. You can’t please everyone. Many will like you and others will hate you, but don’t let those little impediments distract your attention or hurt your feelings.

Many writers or bloggers avoid getting into conflict with readers or try to write articles not to offend others, but at times your article will spark controversy, arguments and hatred, when you aren’t expecting it.

I had a big problem on LinkedIn’s platform when I wrote an article entitled ‘Why many Africans are allergic to reading? The aim of the article is to encourage reading, but it turned out to be an article which nearly caused my crucifixion or lynching by some Africans that find the article unsavory.

When you find yourself in such a situation, don’t lose your temper, remain calm and try to explain the significance of the article. You may receive negative comments, yet still be positive. You may lose some followers, but don’t let that bother you, because those that aren’t ready to learn, aren’t also ready to accept any explanation.

This one of my favorite mails last week.

Just extending my appreciation of your work.  I have read some articles of yours and your interview with Magda Cristina Butucea.  It was poignant!  To know that we still have those who believe in the truth among the profession is consolatory.  I am what you will call a misdirected man (turning 50 soon).

I spent time chasing something I never believed in but thought it was the means to an end – the empowerment of Africans in Europe.  It was a delusion and spent time in prison through malicious prosecutions.  Like you, I loved writing since I was in my primary school years.  I helped write letters for those who could not read to their families who where faraway from their places of work.

I neglected this part of me.  I have decided to spend time doing it now and set up a publishing company with a focus on selling African literature and the creation of educational projects in the form of publications to help spread the truth about our history.  Once again, I am inspired and honoured to read about you.

WWE  has been my best entertainment, not only because of my favourite wrestlers that sacrifice their bodies each week, to thrill fans but because of the stories behind it and what unfolds every week.

It’s good for a man to support his wife in running a business, but the pride of Stephanie McMahon, as the daughter of the Vince McMahon, the owner of WWE, has blinded Triple H, to follow his wife unwisely sometimes in running the affairs of WWE.

How many men or wrestlers, has Stephanie slapped across the face, including Daniel Bryan and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson? If she truly wants everyone to believe that she respects and loves her husband, Triple H, then she must give the same respect to wrestlers in and out of WWE.

Pride and ego have taken over her heart to the extent that, she thinks her father’s industry, feeds the entire American nation and all the wrestlers under the canopy of WWE, without realizing that there wouldn’t be any WWE today; if there are no fans or wrestlers.

They can run WWE at 9.99, but as a man dies, dry leaves fall and the mighty dollar falls sometimes, when the WWE fans begin to boycott the matches one day, they will understand that without them WWE is nothing and without the wrestlers, the company has no future.

The question everyone wants to ask Triple H is, why a sudden handshake request from Roman Reigns, after the injury of Seth Rollins? How does he want Reigns to react after masterminding the betrayal of  Dean Ambrose and him, by Seth Rollins? According to Triple H, for a very long time he has Roman Reigns in mind.

That’s a big lie. He lied, trying to build a good relationship with someone he feared. Surprisingly, WWE fans even knew he lied. Since Reigns didn’t cooperate, he has become Triple H’s enemy. Believe me, Triple H will do his underground work or everything to prevent Roman Reign getting hold of the world championship belt, but time will tell.

Ambrose

Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns: The two biggest threats in WWE today.

The latest development on Monday Night Raw, 11/30/2015, evidently reveals the fear in the eyes of the authority, in regard to Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose. At backstage, Reigns is talking to Dean Ambrose and The Usos when Triple H and Stephanie McMahon appear and asked Reigns to return the belt.

He laughs, and instead of Triple H, he gives it to Stephanie. He tells Triple H to tell Sheamus that he will take back the belt at TLC. Triple H replies, he already spoke to the champ, and he wants to put the belt on the line tonight. Roman is delighted, and Stephanie adds that he must win in 5:15. Why to defeat Sheamus within this short time? Since they can’t control Reigns, if he becomes world champion, they will do everything to prevent him from achieving his goals.

Later Triple H tells Dean Ambrose that if Reigns loses he match, then Ambrose loses his shot as number one contender to wrestle Kevin Owens for the Inter-Continental championship belt, because Reigns need to learn that his actions affect others. Why such harsh decisions? All come to the same answer, fear. The authority can’t deny that.

The authority may choose to manage WWE with iron fist, just  to dominate the wrestlers, but not everyone will yield to that domination. We have seen such wrestlers before in Randy Orton, CM Punk, John Cena etc;  now it’s Roman Reigns. He is not scared to hear “You’re firrrred.”

The Mysterious Sandwich Thief

In Europe and America, an innocent black man likely becomes a suspect because of the colour of his skin. At the premises of the industrial cleaning company, are workers from various countries, including Africans. For almost three months, the company we were working for, takes us to another industrial company in the district of Antwerp, called FABRICOM, to work there.

Fabricom is a construction company occupying a very large terrace. The company installs and maintains electricity installations, video surveillance, heating etc. Like the officials, the industrial workers also used containers as offices, toilets and dining hall.

The work at Fabricom was very heavy, thus; among hardworking operational staff, we do eight hours per day and most of the time, I drive a forklift. At 12 P.M, we have our lunch break. It was launch time we detected that some of the workers’ launch box had gone missing.

To work very hard and to find out that your lunch box is missing or stolen, is an issue too tough to handle. This didn’t happen once or twice but daily. Action speaks louder than words. Being Africans among white workers, all eyes were on us as the suspect, even though we weren’t accused of any theft.

At the dining hall, the atmosphere becomes tense, when on the fifth day of the week, one of the workers finds his food stolen again. This time, the management decides to do something about it. They secretly started their investigations, creating undetected hideout aiming to catch the person responsible for this theft red-handed.

The following week, about a quarter to noonday, a mysterious man emerged into the quiet dining hall, looking for a meal to steal. After tasting a number of meals, he finds a delicious one and he took it. As he tries to walk out he was intercepted.

Shockingly, out of over hundreds of workers at the company, the mysterious thief appeared to be one of our colleagues from Portugal. He was interrogated but the company didn’t call the police. Instead, they informed the boss of our company of what has happened.

Fabricom wouldn’t like to see the thief at the company’s premises again, so the company I was serving sent the Portuguese to another place to work. Sometimes it’s very hard to be judged wrongly because of the colour of your skin, but that shouldn’t prevent us to build a good relationship, with our neighbours, colleagues and our bosses.

Amazon’s Lawsuit Against Fake Reviews

Fake Amazon reviews. You know about them, you might have even bought a few or considered them. It really doesn’t seem that harmful initially, you’re just trying to get the ball rolling by having some reviews placed on your product, and besides, you know that it’s that great, so what harm is there in placing a few reviews? Well, according to the latest lawsuit from Amazon, those fake reviews could be really hurting the company and its integrity. Not only is Amazon stepping up its measures to ban fake reviews, but they are suing sellers of reviews to stop this practice dead in its tracks.

This lawsuit targets all fake reviews for all products. From vacuums to HDTVs, fake reviews have been a cancer that some sellers have used to boost their sales. While we will largely focus on how these reviews affect Kindle and paperback books, this lawsuit is against fake reviews for every product.

Amazon’s Wording

According to the lawsuit, Amazon expressly says that fake reviews are a method by which some sellers attempt to improve their competitive advantage by making their product seem better than what it really is. This is done by creating inauthentic and often inflated reviews that exalt the product as the savior as a genre or the best thing you can possibly buy, but the truth is that the product might be substandard or not worth all the fanfare. This also makes consumers more willing to buy the product based on the glowing reviews, though they may not really like it after they read it.

This also creates distrust in the Amazon brand, as many consumers will wonder if those five-star reviews are real, and they will understandably doubt the integrity of both reviewers and Amazon in general, which leads to reduced sales for everyone involved.

The Truth

Yes, these reviews can be misleading and they do create distrust in the Amazon brand, but let’s examine the truth of these fake reviews. First of all, it’s usually easy to spot the fake review. Most five-star reviews will either be short and sweet (ie: “really did the job, loved it!” or “this book is great, recommend it to all my friends!” or “I’m going to read this book again and again.”) or they give a very detailed look into the product to saw who it’s for and why it’s great.

Fake reviews, on the other hand, will be glowing beacons, espousing just how amazing the product is and glossing over any shortcomings. The grammar and tone will seem mechanical, like it’s not coming from a consumer, and it will use persuasive language to try to get people to buy the product. While there are certainly fake reviews that do the job and come off as consumers, the majority are fairly easy to spot.

There are also some people who wonder how serious this lawsuit is because Amazon recently had an expose about how bad their working conditions are, and they might be using this lawsuit to both distract and to shine light on how consumer-friendly they are. While it’s hard to tell for now since Amazon really is going ahead with this lawsuit, their intentions might be less than pure.

Do Fake Reviews Really Work?

As stated above, most fake reviews are easy to spot, so you might think that these authors don’t get any rewards for their unethical (and possibly soon illegal) behavior, but you’d be wrong. Take the case of John Locke (not the classical writer, but a make-money-fast and novelist modern writer) who used fake reviews to gain his way to the top. For example, his book “How I Sold 1 Million eBooks in 5 Months” contains a number of fake reviews, and you can find them in many of his other books. Several of his books were bestsellers.

There’s also smaller cases like Dagny Taggart’s “Learn Spanish in Seven Days.” There are a significant number of five-star reviews, however a truly impartial review found a number of accent marks that don’t exist in the Spanish language, numerous grammatical errors that were likely made by poor online translations and very basic conversations that wouldn’t help you much in the real world. Effects on Writers

So, even if they aren’t as serious as they are pretending to be, what are the effects on writers? First of all, I hope you never bought any fake reviews or planned to. They rarely have a lasting effect (often causing more harm to your brand than good due to the associated distrust), and more than likely Amazon will be taking stronger methods to remove and block these fake reviews. They might even, though it is quite unlikely, start penalizing authors who use these tactics with harsher punishments.

It might be long and arduous, but the best thing you can do is try to coax good reviews out of people by offering an amazing product. It isn’t as instantaneous as buying one, but it’s the best and more fruitful method as these reviews will be trusted and they will help build your brand. If you have bought fake reviews, then all you can really do is wait it out and see what Amazon does with this new lawsuit. You might be safe, but it’s best to rethink your marketing strategy.

Conclusion

While this might just be a ploy to get attention away from the darker sides of Amazon, this is still a real lawsuit and Amazon is currently planning to go after sellers of these fake reviews to punish them and to show authors (and other sellers) just how serious they are about removing these reviews and restoring trust in the Amazon brand.

Regardless of their intent, it’s best to steer clear from these fake reviews. Hopefully you haven’t bought any yet, but if you were planning to, now is definitely not the time.
