#POEMS: OUT OF THE SILENT BREATH

OBY 8

Jacqueline Oby-Ikocha’s poems portray images that stare us right in the face. Images of love, joy, death, pain, challenges, violation, and freedom. She writes in a language that’s rich in imagery, earthy, honest, vulnerable, yet full of the promise of hope, of loving and of Grace. A collection of light and dark soulful prose.

Somewhere, sometimes, life takes us through difficult, unexpected pathways that bring us to the edge of a precipice. These life-lessons that knock us down to our knees also become turning and redeeming points in our lives. They open our eyes to the important things and make us to question or find our purpose.

They drive us to wake up, to make the conscious choice to rise and step out and to live fully in the present moments that life brings us. It is the things that we deeply love that saves our sanity in these moments and gives us reason to hope, to open the doors and to fly.

Out of the silent breath is a vivid compilation of joyful, melancholic and hopeful prose through different walks of life.

The Author

OBY 6

Jacqueline Oby-Ikocha is a fellow blogger who is originally from Nigeria.  Her blog is A Cooking Pot and Twisted Tales.  She uses this platform to support fellow bloggers and to raise awareness of the many  ongoing cultural inequalities and problems in the world.  Here is Jacqueline’s story in her own words:

I like to describe myself as a Jacqueline of all trade and a mistress of nothing. Everything is work-in-progress in my life, including me. Nothing is finished for, there’s always room for more improvement.

If all is finished, then that means that I am done on this side of the great divide. I believe that I still have a pretty long way to go with hammering myself into a worthy state before toddling off to sing angelic lullabies.

I was born in Nigeria in the mid 70’s, to a family with one of the best parents that I could have ever asked for.

My growing up years was in University of Nigeria, Nsukka campus. A close-knit community where everyone knew what you had for breakfast, lunch and dinner and pretty much any shenanigans that you got up to. Back then, an honorary auntie could feel enough righteous indignation and would help to straighten you out before sending you home to your parents who will cement the straightening with their own dose of reprimanding.

As a young lady in High school, I was involved in a number of social and community activities. From Church work to participating in dramas at the local theatre, speaking at regular debate contests and contribution to the young writer’s club. At the initial stage, these artistic flairs propelled my interest to further my university education in Theatre or Communication Arts, however, due to the general inclination back then, that artists in Nigeria had no bright future, I leaned towards studying law.

My education in law was closely followed by several professional courses, in Public Relations, Chartered Secretary, and Administrators, an associate degree in the French Language as well as a Diploma in Translation. French is a language that I find not only romantic, but everything just sounds decadently delicious in French even when they are shouting.

Fast forward to my career path and like I had indicated right from the onset, I have done so many things.

I started my working life at The Embassy of Tunisia in Lagos as the Personal Assistant to the Ambassador and after a brief stint in France, I returned and joined the Embassy of France also in Lagos.

My position working with the Cultural Attaché to the Embassy of France paved an opportunity to join The Delegation of the European Union in Abuja, Nigeria. It was a job that offered a lot of training and travel opportunities and during this point in time, I met my dear husband, who whisked me off to the altar after a six-month whirlwind courtship. Our union will turn 16 years in November and we are blessed with three beautiful children.

The natural process of having babies with a stillbirth and several miscarriages in-between meant juggling family life along with my career, cycling through different jobs as I sought to find that which suited my family lifestyle a lot better.

I held job positions ranging from Archivist, Executive Assistant, Personal Assistant, Public Relations Officer, Administrative Manager, Records Manager to School Registrar.

Why Many Are Giving Up Blogging?

King 5The significant aim of every blogger, especially writers, is to win the heart of readers to visit their blogs. This the way to tell your visitors what you do. After all the hard work, at the end of the day, only between ten to twenty readers visit the writer’s blog. This is very frustrating indeed.

There are hundreds of articles online, giving instructions on how to attract more traffic to your site. Like many others, I have  tried a lot of them without success.

Sometimes, you might feel that your articles are boring or not inspiring, but that’s not the problem. The reason many readers aren’t visiting your blog is: You are posting an article which has already been written by hundreds of writers. Who is interested to read an article written by hundreds of writers over the same subject?

A successful blog has nothing to do with the number of your followers. You can get over million followers, yet still your blog can’t be progressing or successful, because of lack of readers. For example, it is better for any blogger to get at least between 50 – 100 readers per day, than having thousands of followers.

How many of your followers have the time to read what you write? This is the question you need to take into consideration when blogging, in order to create irresistible articles to draw readers’ attention.

Before writing any article ‘Google’ the subject and find out first how many articles are online over the same subject. If there are hundreds of similar articles online, please don’t waste your time to write or post it, but if you still want to write that particular subject, then let it be entirely different from previous published articles.

Investigative articles  are very interesting, always attracting readers, but if you are scared to publish an article over someone, organisation etc; you will never be successful as a blogger, unless you are writing for fun. Fear is a psychological disease that holds success, thus; you’re preventing your success.

I publish articles the media or bloggers dare to publish. Because that’s what many readers want to read. They want something, different, truthful, scandalous and interesting. This is the secret leading to the success of my blog, without enough followers and without paying a cent for any promotion.

If you are an effective and experienced blogger, you can see that traffic on Saturdays and Sundays is very low, yet good articles can easily increase the rate of traffic significantly on both Saturdays and Sundays. You may not know the impact of your articles on society, so never quit. Write interesting articles to be in the race.

The Essence Of Blog Recognition And Nomination

Sunshine

(Nominated for both Blogger Recognition and Sunshine Blogger Awards.)

There are thousands of writers and authors but not everyone blogs. In our present society, where by the desire of reading is rapidly declining, you should count yourself a lucky one, when you have followers, readers interested in your blog and others that recognize your blog as good.

Every year, different blog recognition and nomination take place under committee of bloggers to determine the best blog. This gives every blogger the opportunity to compete with other bloggers. If your blog is evaluated and you win, you are honoured or awarded. It’s therefore rewarding and satisfying when you are nominated, even though vote leads to your success of winning.

I have been writing without ceasing, since it’s my passion. At the latter part of this year, I have been nominated twice. I received a mail confirming my nomination for ‘The Blogger Recognition Award’ from the well known author William Chasterson and my second nomination for ‘Sunshine Blogger Award’ by Purpleslobinrecovery, both active bloggers.

I give my sincere thanks to the two great bloggers, for their kindness and recognition for my blog. Nomination doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve won the ‘Trophy,’ since you are competing with other bloggers, but it satisfying to know that there are some followers and people out there who are interested in what you write.

Despite my passion as a writer, I dwell on the support of my followers and readers, because their likes and comments inspire me in certain ways. I learn from each comment and usually creates articles from what they say. I therefore give thanks to my followers and readers that despite how busy engaged to other activities, they still find time to visit my blog.

Social Media Tips: How To Increase Your Text Or Font Size in WordPress

WORD 1

WordPress is a social platform made easy with essential tools, to make it simple and easy for the blogger and website owners. For example it has ‘Akismet’ anti-spam plugin which stops spam comments and trackbacks. Besides, WordPress has provided ‘Jetpack’ plugin that gives access to hosted features automatically.

I am completely new to WordPress, but because they made it easy and simple for bloggers to enjoy using the platform, I’m getting familiar to many things. Online and on the support platform of WordPress, there are several questions over how to change the font size to make it easy for some readers that find it difficult to read.

I painstakingly followed the instructions to increase the size of the text of the theme I’m using but all were abortive. Just as I was about to give up, I discovered how easy it was. Below is a simplest and easiest way to increase your text.

  • At the top left hand corner of your blog you see ‘My Sites’ at near ‘W’, the logo of WordPress.
  • Point your mouse cursor on it, then comes underneath ‘View Site, WP admin, Stats, Pages, Media, News etc.
  • Under ‘LOOK AND FEEL’ click ‘Customize.’ A customizing window opens with this message ‘You are customizing ……………. (The name of your blog is written there.)
  • Then follows ‘You are customizing …………….(That’s the name of the Theme you are using.)
  • Point your cursor to ‘Customize’ and click. Underneath appears

Custom Design

Site Title and Tagline

Colors and Background

Fonts

Header Image etc.

Click ‘Fonts’ when the window of the fonts widget opens, increase the size of your text the way you want it and then SAVE IT. (Don’t forget to save it. View your blog and you see how large and beautiful your articles are seen.

You Too Can Make Money As A Writer

Money 3

Many contact me on LinkedIn’s platform if I could suggest or introduce a website, whereby they can write articles to be paid. As a matter of fact, there are hundreds of websites that accept articles from writers, but most to promote your articles, thus; someone may hire you if interested in you as a writer, but gaining recognition as a writer to be hired doesn’t come easy.

It seems when the mind is occupied with various plans and ideas, we ignore or forget the places where we need to explore to make money online as a blogger or writer. Many bloggers, including me, make money online. Bear in mind, the significance of this article has got nothing to do with pride or to boast, it’s an article revealing how many people can make a lot of money monthly by blogging or writing interesting articles as a hobby.

There is nothing which is impossible in this modern time, especially when the advancement in technology has no limit. There are so many tools to create free blogs without paying a cent. Online are lists of free websites and blog hosts, including Blogger and WordPress, which you can make a lot of money every month, by registering for Adsense.

Google AdSense is a free, simple way for website publishers of all sizes to earn money by displaying targeted Google ads on their websites. Apart from Google AdSense, there are other adverts sources that generate money on blogs, depending on how interesting the blog is and the number of people that visit the blog.

There are many books on this subject, including numerous articles online, but as a writer, I maintain certain principles to make my articles worthy to read and generate my money. You don’t need to go to the university to earn a degree before becoming a blogger. An illiterate can blog in his or her mother tongue if he can’t speak English to generate money on his or her blog.

When one wants to write an article that can easily be accepted by the print media for publication, choose topics like teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, crime or any other social problems affecting the society to write about. The print media don’t like them but love them.

Choose good titles for your articles and when writing, let readers know the effect of the chosen subject you are writing about. You could even suggest how the government should tackle the problem by reducing or permanently eradicating it.

Don’t try to impress the publisher by writing long articles; else the article may lose its significance. Let your article be short, with all the ingredients that make it interesting to read. You will be happy to sit by your dining table reading your own written article or getting paid for the customers your blog attracts.
