Amazon’s Lawsuit Against Fake Reviews

FAKE 7

Original article posted on Amy Harrop’s Blog by Haya

Fake Amazon reviews. You know about them, you might have even bought a few or considered them. It really doesn’t seem that harmful initially, you’re just trying to get the ball rolling by having some reviews placed on your product, and besides, you know that it’s that great, so what harm is there in placing a few reviews? Well, according to the latest lawsuit from Amazon, those fake reviews could be really hurting the company and its integrity. Not only is Amazon stepping up its measures to ban fake reviews, but they are suing sellers of reviews to stop this practice dead in its tracks.

This lawsuit targets all fake reviews for all products. From vacuums to HDTVs, fake reviews have been a cancer that some sellers have used to boost their sales. While we will largely focus on how these reviews affect Kindle and paperback books, this lawsuit is against fake reviews for every product.

Amazon’s Wording

According to the lawsuit, Amazon expressly says that fake reviews are a method by which some sellers attempt to improve their competitive advantage by making their product seem better than what it really is. This is done by creating inauthentic and often inflated reviews that exalt the product as the savior as a genre or the best thing you can possibly buy, but the truth is that the product might be substandard or not worth all the fanfare. This also makes consumers more willing to buy the product based on the glowing reviews, though they may not really like it after they read it.

This also creates distrust in the Amazon brand, as many consumers will wonder if those five-star reviews are real, and they will understandably doubt the integrity of both reviewers and Amazon in general, which leads to reduced sales for everyone involved.

The Truth

Yes, these reviews can be misleading and they do create distrust in the Amazon brand, but let’s examine the truth of these fake reviews. First of all, it’s usually easy to spot the fake review. Most five-star reviews will either be short and sweet (ie: “really did the job, loved it!” or “this book is great, recommend it to all my friends!” or “I’m going to read this book again and again.”) or they give a very detailed look into the product to saw who it’s for and why it’s great.

Fake reviews, on the other hand, will be glowing beacons, espousing just how amazing the product is and glossing over any shortcomings. The grammar and tone will seem mechanical, like it’s not coming from a consumer, and it will use persuasive language to try to get people to buy the product. While there are certainly fake reviews that do the job and come off as consumers, the majority are fairly easy to spot.

There are also some people who wonder how serious this lawsuit is because Amazon recently had an expose about how bad their working conditions are, and they might be using this lawsuit to both distract and to shine light on how consumer-friendly they are. While it’s hard to tell for now since Amazon really is going ahead with this lawsuit, their intentions might be less than pure.

Do Fake Reviews Really Work?

As stated above, most fake reviews are easy to spot, so you might think that these authors don’t get any rewards for their unethical (and possibly soon illegal) behavior, but you’d be wrong. Take the case of John Locke (not the classical writer, but a make-money-fast and novelist modern writer) who used fake reviews to gain his way to the top. For example, his book “How I Sold 1 Million eBooks in 5 Months” contains a number of fake reviews, and you can find them in many of his other books. Several of his books were bestsellers.

There’s also smaller cases like Dagny Taggart’s “Learn Spanish in Seven Days.” There are a significant number of five-star reviews, however a truly impartial review found a number of accent marks that don’t exist in the Spanish language, numerous grammatical errors that were likely made by poor online translations and very basic conversations that wouldn’t help you much in the real world. The only way to get so many great reviews with these many issues would be by buying them (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2015/10/21/how-an-industry-of-amazon-entrepreneurs-pulled-off-the-internets-craftiest-catfishing-scheme/).

According to Amazon’s own internal memos, they know that at least 60% of reviews are fake, and they also understand that stopping this flood is close to impossible. While finding authors who have used these reviews to skyrocket to the top can be difficult, you can find a list of unethical authors here who have used or are suspected of using fake reviews: https://zonalert.wordpress.com/2014/08/23/onlie-ratings-and-reviews-are-fake/.

Effects on Writers

So, even if they aren’t as serious as they are pretending to be, what are the effects on writers? First of all, I hope you never bought any fake reviews or planned to. They rarely have a lasting effect (often causing more harm to your brand than good due to the associated distrust), and more than likely Amazon will be taking stronger methods to remove and block these fake reviews. They might even, though it is quite unlikely, start penalizing authors who use these tactics with harsher punishments.

It might be long and arduous, but the best thing you can do is try to coax good reviews out of people by offering an amazing product. It isn’t as instantaneous as buying one, but it’s the best and more fruitful method as these reviews will be trusted and they will help build your brand. If you have bought fake reviews, then all you can really do is wait it out and see what Amazon does with this new lawsuit. You might be safe, but it’s best to rethink your marketing strategy.

Conclusion

While this might just be a ploy to get attention away from the darker sides of Amazon, this is still a real lawsuit and Amazon is currently planning to go after sellers of these fake reviews to punish them and to show authors (and other sellers) just how serious they are about removing these reviews and restoring trust in the Amazon brand.

Regardless of their intent, it’s best to steer clear from these fake reviews. Hopefully you haven’t bought any yet, but if you were planning to, now is definitely not the time.

Bio-warfare Laboratories Of German And Japanese War Criminals Under The Guidance Of USA: The Revealing Voices of AIDS/HIV Theory Dissidents

Case

By Johan van Dongen and Joel Savage

The horrific Aids pandemic, tremendously has generated scientific controversies within and outside the scientific establishment. Only a minority of scientists, like Johan van Dongen, and other engaged people have access to inside information concerning (bio-warfare) Aids and Ebola research.

As an experimental micro-surgeon in the early seventies, almost at the beginning of the multiple organ transplantation era,  Micro-Surgeon Johan van Dongen did carried out thousands of experimental organ transplantation. In order to deal with organ rejection, he administered, radiation and sera for diminishing the immunity of the organ receiver. Besides that he also administered uncountable agents to recipients of organs in order to trigger, diminish or completely wipe out the immune capacity which can be compared with Aids.

During his university and hospital appointments in the early seventies, and later undercover in the pharmaceutical industry, he discovered that animals didn’t die because of rejection of the transplanted organ but because of multiple infections which can be compared with human Aids victims. So, Johan van Dongen noticed that Aids can be induced by radiation, aflatoxins, Immuran/prednisolone combination, anti-lymphocyte sera, and many other bio-warfare agents.

Dormant HIV virus

As head of the Department of Experimental Microsurgery, and involved in all transplantation and immunological experiments, Johan also had been involved in many controversies. Especially the connection of his work and the polemic concerning the transmission of HIV.  In many ways, he discovered not only in his experiments but also in the extensive scientific literature the role of an obligatory co-factor that trans-activates the “Dormant” virus HIV in specific human cells. This obligatory co-factor which trans-activates the “Dormant” virus in specific human cells are deliberately introduced into mostly black-skinned people, collectively, Africans, governed by massive environmental factors, as you can read in our book: “Aids and Ebola the greatest crime in medical history against mankind,” in order to depopulate Africa.

Therefore we will always like to enlighten readers about the real origin of Aids and the true nature of famous international researchers as Robert Gallo. And as far as Gallo is concerned, Ricardo Veronesi, professor of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sao Paulo, was personally informed about the true nature of  Gallo’s research long before this controversy turned into a public scandal and as a consequence thousands of scientific Aids dissidents.

It was no less than Francoise Barré-Sinoussi of the French Pasteur Institute, who revealed the criminal intention of Gallo. And not only she became an Aids dissident but also the discovery of the HIV virus Luc Montagnier disputed Gallo, the fake discoverer of the HIV virus. In their opinion, the major bursts in the common scientific approach lie in its ignoring that the pathogenic of the HIV. Indeed it is governed by multiple deliberate environmental factors and one of these determinant factors is the PCR test (Polymerase Chain Reaction Test).

Polymerase Chain Reaction Test

This test is a technology in molecular biology used to amplify a single copy or a few copies of a piece of DNA across several orders of magnitude, generating thousands to millions of copies of a particular DNA sequence. Especially the diagnosis of hereditary diseases; the identification of genetic fingerprints, used in forensic sciences and paternity testing; and the detection and diagnosis of infectious diseases. The PCR test can be used to investigate the connection of diseases to the specific black race. Moreover, PCR can be extensively modified to perform a wide array of genetic manipulations not only in humans but also from microorganisms which cause Aids and Ebola.

Using an extrapolation of these kinds of techniques we can conclude that almost all persons who have HIV in their bodies, were purposely infected with this virus which can lead to Aids. Bio-warfare scientists are able to make black people artificially susceptible to HIV or Ebola by using controllable diseases as a cover-up.

Most of the biowarfare research using viruses which cause Aids and Ebola was predominantly carried out in Germany and Japan until 1945 and since then mainly in the USA and France, using Nazi and Japanese (military) scientific war criminals.

The Revealing Voices of Aids/HIV Theory Dissidents

The official scientific origin of the diverse HIV-strains has been placed somewhere between 1938 and 1948 when scientist T.F. Smith et al published an article in the authoritative medical journal Nature about this period in 1988 named: “The phylogenetic history of immunodeficiency virus”.

He wasn’t the only scientists who revealed the true nature of the HIV virus. Smith’s efforts to reveal the real origin of HIV was followed, to name a few, by Sharp et al with his article: “Understanding the origins of Aids viruses”, also in Nature, followed by Meyers et all with: “The phylogenetic analysis of the HIVs”. But the most important article is described in the top of the bill of medical journals the Lancet by scientist L.A. Evans et al who discovered the; “Simultaneous isolation of HIV-1 and HIV-2 from an Aids patient”.

All these mentioned scientists agreed that the distribution of the HIV virus was an intentional action. Their findings make it very conceivable that this distribution was intentional because sometimes both the new viruses HIV-1 and HIV-2, respectively HTLV-IV, are existing in one and the same person according to Evans. And because his publication is checked by the editing and scientific boards of the Lancet the outcome of his investigation was true. This counts also for thousands of publications in other medical journals as described in our book “Aids and Ebola the greatest crime in medical history against mankind.”

German scientist Wolff Geisler

According to the famous Aids/HIV theory dissident Wolff Geisler, further evidence of the intentional distribution, out of the mentioned simultaneous infection of the same persons, it was described as a second Aids epidemic in the same black-skinned population, by an inefficient transmission of the HIV virus. The appearance of this extremely rare retrovirus among the African Aids patients is so conspicuous that some world-famous scientists uttered a sentence about it. They alleged this to be; “Only another acquired opportunistic infection but rather an additional death sentence”. But is it?

In Africa, the probability of an early death of HIV patients is three times bigger than elsewhere when HIV patients are simultaneously infected with HTLV-1 as described in the Lancet by Page et al in his scientific publication: HTLV-I/II seropositivity and death from Aids among HIV-I seropositive intravenous drug users (Lancet, 1990; 335: 1439-41), an even more extremely important publication for the Aids/HIV theory dissidents. Because especially HTLV-I, among many other HIV viruses, was only demonstrated in Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, and Namibia.  HIV patients only in these countries appear simultaneously up till now.

According to Wolff Geisler, the concomitant existence of HTLV-I and HIV produces the observed rate of Aids patients in Uganda, Kenya and black-skinned people in Florida, USA and some Caribbean Islands, even though in general black people are by nature more resistant against HIV-infection than pale-skinned persons (see below). This means the HIV viruses are genetically engineered as described in our book.

No less than Luc Montagnier et al, the discoverer of the HIV virus stated that this virus is made out of the Nazi eugenics and genetic engineered experiments as well as the development of Aids-causing viruses in horses. In a very talked about an article he described in the authoritative Annals of Virology: “A new type of retrovirus from patients presenting with lymphadenopathy and acquired immune deficiency syndrome”: Structural and anti-genetic relatedness with Equine Infectious Anemia Virus EIAV (horse Aids), 1984; 135E: 119-31.

Equine Infectious Anemia Virus EIAV (HIV/Horse-Aids) made by Nazi Germany.

If we compare these findings to our references in “Aids the greatest crime in medical history against mankind” the book now available at Amazon, the HLA-A, B, C, DR3 and DR5 loci, is examined by the Nazi’s led by Otmar Verschuer.

In 1956 he joined the American Eugenics Society and worked under auspices of the Rockefeller-fund. He was also head of the Department of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Germany.

Furthermore, we have to take into account that within people who have blood type HLA-DR3 Aids, it is much less common than in people who have the HLA-DR5 type. Under the Nazi’s research, it is important to note that precisely the HLA-DR5 type occurs mainly in Jews. The HLA-DR3 type contrast is most common in dark-colored Africans.

These two shreds of evidence or references are enough to let you know vividly what took place. In general, you can say that it is harder for blacks to get Aids than as it is for whites, but blacks have been made susceptible for a broad spectrum of brand new diseases caused by Germans, partly under the auspices of the South African Apartheid regime, and after the war under guidance of the U.S.A.

Nowadays we now know that monkeys do not get Aids when infected with the human Aids virus. The same goes for tuberculosis until the moment that monkeys in a laboratory made receptive. Therefore black-skinned people are under no circumstances contaminated with Aids by monkeys with or without eating them. That is so to speak a criminal scientific fairy tale.

Book Review: How Fake Reviews Have Tarnished The Image Of The Publishing Industry

REVIEWReviews influence the majority of people, including readers, when they shop online, but many are fake.

Apart from promotion, marketing and the effectiveness of the social media, book review plays an important role in the sales of books. A good review reflects on how good or great the book is, giving it a unique recognition, to entice book readers to go for the product.

Writing a book without any effort to sell it, is like putting a lighted candle under an upside down bucket, no one will see the ray of light, supposed to brighten the environment. As a matter of fact, as an aspiring writer, I thought writing a book was the toughest thing on earth, until I realized that the hardest part of being an author is facing the reality of promoting or marketing your book.

Like flowers depend on rain or water to blossom, every writer dreams of getting a good review to enhance the sales of his or her book, unfortunately, review doesn’t come easy. Since it doesn’t come easy, many resort to the means of dishonesty, by faking reviews, at many bookstores, including Amazon, Createspace and Barnes and Noble.

Life is full of dishonesty and cheating to the extent that, if you don’t follow up to live in that category, you are considered a fool in the society. The desire to make it to the top, has brought corruption in the book review industry today. Many pay for book review, something I will never do, the fact that I consider it a bribe to someone to review my book. If you are confident your book is good, please desist from paying for review. This is an advice I will give to any genuine author.

Let’s take for example, if my book isn’t good, since I have paid to be reviewed, there is a certain pressure on the reviewer to give me a good review. In my opinion, an author should rely on a review from an unknown reader. Just be patient, no matter how long it takes. Don’t let the desire to sell your book at all cost, push you into certain things which question your integrity and diminish your credibility as an author or writer.

Ellory 8

Cheating ‘Bestselling, award-winning author, R.J. Ellory. He was exposed after faking his reviews for years to reach the top.

One of the famous writers who resorted to dishonesty, by cheating to the top is R.J. Ellory. The cheating ‘Bestselling, award-winning’ author, was caught faking Amazon reviews for both his own books and the books of his competitors. Ellory was caught writing fake Amazon reviews by fellow author Jeremy Duns online. He praises his own work and faked reviews against his competitors, he saw as his enemies.

He sold millions of books under false reviews, while his followers acknowledged him as one of the world’s greatest writers. There are many genuine writers with good stories, because they aren’t cheating, no one knows, cares or classifies them as good writers or authors. They don’t even have enough followers on Twitter or Facebook, because we are in world that liars and cheats are easily accepted in the society, because they often appear on the television to deceive the people.

Recently one of the biggest online bookshops has deleted many reviews they suspected to be fake. Patience moves mountains. As writers and authors aiming to sell our books, we should take our reputation and credibility into consideration to live clean.

Housing Works Bookstore Café Shows How Indie Bookstores Can Win In The Age Of Amazon

Original article posted at Huffpost Art & Culture: April 25, 2015.

INDIE

Remember The Shop Around the Corner? The charming children’s bookstore tragically had to close its doors in 1998 after Fox Books — a big box store with lattés, low prices and unbeatable selection — ran it out of business.

Sure, that’s just the plot of the classic Meg Ryan-Tom Hanks vehicle “You’ve Got Mail,” but it was never purely fiction. The battle between Ryan’s tiny independent bookstore and Hanks’ behemoth was being played out, with admittedly less romance, all over the country.

Barnes & Noble Booksellers and Borders offered the bulk discounts and enormous selection long-standing indies could not, and the latter began to shutter at an alarming rate. Thousands of booksellers — nearly 40 percent, in fact — left the independent stores’ American Booksellers Association in the late ‘90s, according to New York magazine.

A modern “You’ve Got Mail,” however, might pit Fox Books as the plucky underdog against Internet sales titan Amazon. In 2011, Borders left the arena, unable to compete with Amazon’s still-lower prices and the customer’s ability to buy books without even leaving home. Barnes & Noble remains, but seems a shell of itself; it’s been closing stores and trying futilely to compete with Amazon online.

And now, The Shop Around the Corner is making a surprise comeback. Indie bookstores have been resurgent in recent years, filling the void of brick-and-mortar shopping left by closing big-box bookstores. How are these bookshops succeeding where Borders buckled?

Housing Works Bookstore Café, part of the Housing Works charity in New York City, which provides housing and other services to people living with HIV/Aids, perfectly exemplifies the answer. While walking into a generic big-box bookstore feels a lot like shopping at a slightly more expensive, slightly less convenient version of Amazon, walking into Housing Works feels worlds apart.

The shelves are lined with an idiosyncratic array of donated and used books, including a shelf of donated galley copies. The beautiful, sunny space centers on a cozy café space, the ideal place to get lost in a stack of potential purchases and a coffee for an afternoon. The staff are passionate volunteers and nonprofit employees ready to welcome you and recommend the best book for you. You can come back — not just for readings or celebrity book signings, but for speed dating with book geeks, arty trivia, or even your wedding, if you want.

Housing Works, like so many beloved indie bookstores, offers something that Amazon can’t do better. They’re turning book-shopping into an opportunity to reconnect as communities, and it turns out that’s something readers still want.

Author Rachel Ann Nunes Claims Her Christian Romance Novel Was Plagiarized With Added Sex Scenes

Original article posted at ‘Huff Post Books’

A Utah author says a schoolteacher plagiarized her Christian romance novel, added graphic sex scenes and passed it off as her own.

Rachel

In a case she says brings to light plagiarism in the burgeoning world of online self-publishing, Rachel Ann Nunes of Orem filed a federal lawsuit in August against a Layton teacher, Tiffanie Rushton, who she says cut and pasted large sections from an electronic copy of her book.

Nunes wrote “Love to the Highest Bidder” in 1998 about two art dealers, one from New York and the other from California, who meet while competing for an Indian Buddha statue and fall in love.

It was first published by a Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints-oriented publisher. After the book went out of print, Nunes got the copyright and put out a slightly revised e-book version on Amazon.com with the name “A Bid for Love.”

The Author

Rachel 2

Rachel Ann Nunes learned to read when she was four, beginning a lifetime fascination with the written word. She avidly devoured books then and still reads everything she can lay hands on, from children’s stories to science articles. She began writing in the seventh grade and is now the author of nearly fifty published books, including the popular Autumn Rain series and the picture book Daughter of a King.

Her most recent novel is Blinded (An Autumn Rain Novel) and Before I say Goodbye (Whitney Award winner). Rachel and her husband, TJ, are the parents of three boys and four girls. Rachel loves camping with her family, traveling and meeting new people, and, of course, writing. As a stay-at-home mother of seven, it isn’t easy to find time to write, but she will trade washing dishes or weeding the garden for an hour at the computer any day!

Her only rule about writing is to never eat chocolate at the computer. “Since I love chocolate and writing,” she jokes, “my family might never see me again.” Rachel writes Monday through Friday in a home office, often with a child on her lap. She takes frequent breaks from writing to build Lego towers, practice reading, or go swimming with the kids.

Kobo Unveils New E-Reader To Take On Kindle Voyage

Kobo launches its latest e-reader today, the Kobo Glo HD, which it bills as a device featuring “the highest resolution screen available on the market, at the lowest price.”

Kobo 2

At $129.99, the device is $70 cheaper than the $199 Kindle Voyage, which Amazon rolled out in September last year.

The Glo HD features a six-inch, 300 ppi Carta E Ink HD touchscreen, a 1GHz processor and an estimated two months of battery life (based on 30 minutes of daily reading), making it a top-shelf e-reader as far as specs are concerned.

Kobo says its target user is a committed print reader who hasn’t yet gone digital, but the Glo HD also seems aimed at attracting premium e-reader aficionados who are looking to upgrade for less.

The device is Kobo’s latest since launching the Aura H2O, the first waterproof e-reader, last August.
