Everyone has wonderful hopes, dreams, and expectations of their future, but many times what we are looking for never come our way. Some of us have been robbed of our joy through the loss of a loved one and many feel lonely and hopeless when they find themselves in abusive homes and domestic violence.

In such a troubled world, it’s very easy to see the ailments of the society taking its toll on people. The high rate of unemployment and divorce, are also some of the causes leading to depression. It’s not surprised that psychologists have confirmed that the ailments of people can be traced from the homes and environment they were raised.

We understand that as human beings, we are bound to face difficulties in our lives, the important question is: How do we handle those problems we experience? According to World Federation for Mental Health, depression is a significant contributor to the global burden of disease and affects people in all communities across the world.

Today, depression is estimated to affect 350 million people. The World Mental Health Survey conducted in 17 countries found that on average about 1 in 20 people reported having an episode of depression. But do you know that you have the power to overcome loneliness and depression?

Why some people easily succumbed to depression and others able to resist? The happy people we often meet on the street are not super humans. They are only happy because experience in life has taught them that happiness is yourself. Someone can make you unhappy, prevent your success, or do everything to hurt you, but so long as you are a living being, you have the power, desire, inspiration or everything it takes to liberate yourself from that misery, loneliness or depression.

Fear, anxiety, depression and loneliness can easily be prevented than you know. Instead of living on drugs and alcohol, which rather increase your psychological problems, there are some recommended steps which can keep one far from loneliness and depression. Reading interesting books as a hobby can capture your imagination to avoid depression.

If you love to stay at home, please cultivate the habit of taking a walk through the gardens, doing window shopping, joining social clubs. Going to the gym to exercise once or twice a week doesn’t only keep you fit but also psychologically healthy. You may have a hidden talent but you don’t know. Find out what you are very good at, follow it and start blogging to create your happiness.

Another important factor is financial matters, which often wear people down psychologically. When facing financial problems, you need a healthy mind to find your way out not a depressed mind.  I can’t do it, I’m not sure I can succeed, there is nothing left for me in life, are all ‘symptoms’ of depression. Take away the shackle off your body and free mind from the psychological chain damaging your health.

Very often psychologists and psychiatrists trace the cause of our present day ailments to homes.  Homes have straightforward stories to tell. The set up of our homes, immediately convey the message to a visitor the nature and character of those dwelling there and the sort of training or life being acquired from it. 

Living in an unsafe community, low-quality child care, lack of resources, broken homes, divorces etc; are some of the causes affecting children. Even though entertainment is said to enhance children’s education, it is said to be one of the major factors which affect children’s behavior. What programs are children watching on the television or what kind of games are they playing?

Unsafe, violent and crime games, are yearly produced by ‘Games Manufacturing Companies’ for children. Those companies called them ‘entertainments’ for children. The strong desire for money prevents them to see the harm they are doing to children. Staying hours playing these violent games continue affecting and shaping the lives of these children.

When a child starts cursing, using bad words at home or school is the time the child needs admonition from parents or teachers. They often learn those bad words from the programs they watched on the television or the games they play. The next thing is asking for fake or toy guns for their birthdays. A mother who loves her child will do everything to make him or her happy.

However, buying a toy gun for your son on his birthday, because he wants it, is a way of training your child to be a gun lover. The reason in the United States of America, many children are involved in juvenile crimes, relating to shootings. Yes, some children indulge in entertainments that graphically portrays immoral behavior.

Think, for example, movie and radio stations. Some movie stations feature only violent movies and some radio stations play sadistic and demonic music. Violent hip-hop or rap music, become some children’s favorite music. They don’t only sing, but they do the violent things the songs preach. When violently erupts, it doesn’t only sweep along those that called for it, but also innocent victims. That’s the sad part of it.

People are confused about religion. Islam, they say means ‘Brotherhood, Togetherness, and Peace, but what we see now is terrorism engulfing our neighborhood, discouraging parents to speak to children about the Gospel or to embrace Bible principles. Religious violence shouldn’t prevent mothers to encourage children to adhere to educating and inspiring Biblical principles.

Education starts at home and what parents teach children from early childhood, become part of someone’s personality and characteristics. Therefore, the things kids learn from their parents have a lasting impression on people. Thus; parents should be careful about teaching their kids the moral values and responsibilities to the society.

Thousands of people today, including teenagers, are heavy smokers due to various reasons such as nervousness, pressure, frustration and stress. Smoking has claimed and continue to claim thousands of lives yearly that, it became an urgent issue to the World Health Organization (WHO) to institute a “No Tobacco Day” on May 31, 1987, to discourage and eradicate cigarette smoking.

Despite the warning on cigarette boxes, smokers choose to satisfy their desire unconcerned. Cigarette has been known to contain eighteen different poisons. The two most destructive are tar, a carcinogenic or cancer producing substance and nicotine. Some of these attack the delicate membranes of the windpipes and those that find themselves in the bloodstream interfere with its normal circulation.

It’s now like a fashion to see teenagers between the ages of 10 and 15 holding cigarettes at hideouts, in public places and schools. It’s like a competition. Many teenage students are heavily hooked on cigarettes than adults. When one asks any teenager the reason for smoking, they smile away. Those capable of giving you an answer say “It’s pressure and stress.” Tobacco smoking is said to cause many ailments as emphysema, tuberculosis, night sweats, chest pains, wheezing, and loss of weight, cancer and complications in pregnancy.

Since the campaign against smoking began, WHO has introduced many measures to prevent smoking in buses, airplanes, trains restaurants and other public places, but many see this campaign against smoking as a bother or nuisance. They only realize the mistakes they had done when a disease is diagnosed. Cigarette smoking is not an expensive luxury but a slow silent murderer. Apart from the harm cigarette does to the body, cigarette waste dirties the environment. It is a difficult task getting rid of cigarette stubs littered around.

Recommended steps by health specialists to refrain from smoking

A person that gives up smoking does something worthwhile for his health. But many smokers have a real battle to conquer when it comes to stopping the habit. Staying away from other smokers, as much as possible will reduce the temptation to smoke. Instead of smoking, a heavy smoker should rather become a vigorous campaigner against the use of tobacco in any form. This may change the attitude of friends toward smoking.

Taking plenty of exercise, including deep breathing and long walks in open air several times daily, will clean the lungs and improve one’s sense of well being. Eating regularly, and not attempting to lose weight, will gradually break the tobacco habit. A smoker who wants to quit must avoid highly seasoned foods, alcohol, tea and coffee, according to health magazine I read recently. These can easily influence one to crave to smoking.

Drinking enough water at least ten glasses a day, help to reduce the craving for tobacco. Many may not believe this but try and see, as prayer is one of the effective the answers to many problems.

It’s great to be young since life is beautiful, wonderful and full of experiences. Many are born with silver spoon in their mouths, while others born on a bed of poverty. The latter has to run a mile for his daily bread. Surprisingly, there are stories of people who were born into great and wealthy families, whose lives ended with sad events and others born into poverty, but rose to be most industrious and respected people in the society.

While in school many dream of getting good jobs and probably the right partners to start a family. These are essential in life. Without planning one can’t make a good decision and future. When young many never think of old age, until it catches them by surprise. In fact, old age doesn’t mean suffering but at a ripe age we often find ourselves in various health problems, making life miserable sometimes. Many times at old age, there isn’t any more energy to feed on your own, thus; becoming a child once again, under the care of both good and bad people.

We do often hear people saying “Life is short, so let’s enjoy ourselves?” But we shouldn’t forget that what we do while young, determines our future.  According to psychologists and psychiatrists, the roots of our present day ailments can be traced to our homes. That means that we can plan a better life or abide by healthy rules to enjoy healthy lives, instead of misusing our bodies which speed up to ailments at old age.

After a wonderful life, we meet health problems, such as loss hearing, impair vision, urinary and prostate cancer and other old health problems.  Sometimes a doctor may even find a problem during a routine checkup and discover illness we weren’t aware of. One addicted to health hazard substance, can’t enjoy a perfect healthy life, like one free from drugs. Some health hazard addictions sometimes make one older and gaunt, even though the person may be in his or her thirties.

At certain time, old people in excruciating pain prefer to die, while those who are even older and enjoying happy life wish they could live longer. Life it’s like a journey before every one, if it’s well driven, you will achieve success at the end of the journey and when carelessly driven, you will end up in unpleasant situations.
